Summary
The Mechanical Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of pumping systems (including motors, centrifugal pumps, condensate pumps, fans, and other mechanical systems requiring repair or replacement) at the BMS Devens site. Ensures mechanical equipment operates efficiently and reliably to support critical manufacturing processes and complies with regulatory standards.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Participate in a detailed training program to develop expertise and train a cross-functional team in mechanical system operations and maintenance.
- Install, inspect, and maintain mechanical systems including centrifugal pumps, chillers, boiler auxiliary systems, and extraction systems; coordinate with HVAC, plumbing, and electrical technicians for repairs.
- Perform diagnostics and repairs for mechanical and electrical problems in pumping equipment, heat exchangers, and other systems to minimize disruption.
- Perform routine preventive and corrective maintenance to ensure optimal performance and compliance with GMP.
- Monitor operating parameters of pumping systems across the site (chiller room, boiler room, cooling towers, and heat exchanger systems).
- Read, interpret, and redline engineering blueprints, P&IDs, technical diagrams, and manufacturer instructions for pharmaceutical environments.
- Maintain accurate documentation (service reports, maintenance logs, regulatory compliance records).
- Respond to emergency service requests and troubleshoot problems in critical environments as needed.
- Ensure work complies with company policies, EHS safety procedures, and regulatory requirements (FDA, OSHA, EPA).
- Collaborate on facility projects, equipment upgrades, and validation/commissioning activities.
- Keep tools, equipment, and work areas clean, organized, and safe; maintain daily contact with supervisory staff for assignments and guidance.
Qualifications / Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum 2 years of Mechanical Technician experience, preferably in pharmaceutical/biotech or other regulated manufacturing.
Preferred Skills / Trade Licensure
- Professional trade licensure a plus (HVACR and/or plumbing/pipefitter).

- Ability to communicate with Operations staff to minimize impact to production.
- Strong mechanical systems/controls knowledge in GMP-regulated environments.
- Proficient in troubleshooting, repair, and preventive maintenance of complex mechanical equipment.
- Ability to read/interpret technical documents, schematics, and regulatory guidelines.
- Familiarity with GMP/FDA and regulatory requirements for environmental controls.
- Strong problem-solving, organization, documentation, attention to detail, and safety/compliance mindset.
- Effective communication and teamwork; ability to work independently and respond to urgent situations.
- Physical ability to lift heavy equipment, work in confined spaces, work from heights, and perform tasks in varied facility conditions.
