Position Summary:
The Specimen Processing Clerk I supports the department with clerical and ancillary duties for creating and accessioning clinical cases for patient output, following standard laboratory procedures and policies and progressing knowledge of CLIA, CAP, and NYS regulations.

Job Responsibilities:
- Open packages and perform video receipt of incoming specimens for clinical processing.
- Create and manage patient cases (set up new cases, update current cases, enter specimens, attach relevant documents, perform QC checks for accuracy).
- Open and close specimen and case discrepancies to ensure accurate, timely processing.
- Work cross-functionally with Client Services, IHC, PAs, Pathologists, and Reporting.
- File, track, retrieve, and maintain accurate records.
- Maintain specimen diagnostic viability; ensure correct patient labeling; verify accuracy in the laboratory information system (LIS).
- Log specimens prepared into laboratory logs and the LIS.
- Perform QA/QC for cases, specimens, and documentation.
- Maintain supply inventory (receiving packages, supply chain requests, and submitting orders to Purchasing).
- Assist with related duties and special projects as needed.

Required Qualifications:
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and basic internet use for business.

Preferred Qualifications / Skills:
- 1–3 years of general laboratory operations experience.
- Ability to take and follow direction; know available resources.
- Ability to multitask in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Drive for results/continuous improvement.
- Proficient verbal and written communication; teamwork; customer service focus.
- Knowledge of laboratory safety procedures for biohazards/chemicals and quality control procedures/regulations.

Physical Demands:
- Computer use; inventory and ordering records (copiers, fax machines, PDF scanners).
- Visual acuity and ability to pass color discrimination test.
- Manual dexterity; ability to perform sterile techniques; sit/stand for long periods; repetitive motion.
- Lift up to 30 pounds.
- May be exposed to fumes/chemicals (e.g., formaldehyde, xylene, DAB, alcohol) and blood-borne pathogens; possible exposure to extreme temperatures.

Training:
- Job-specific, safety, and compliance training assigned based on job functions.

Other:
- Periodic travel and some evenings/weekends/holidays.
- 1st shift: 10:00am–6:30pm (5x8) or 10:00am–8:30pm (4x10).
