General Summary:
The Senior Medical Science Liaison (Sr MSL) serves as a scientific liaison to the medical/academic community, establishing and maintaining relationships with Health Care Providers/Professionals (HCPs) to disseminate clinical and scientific information about Vertex’ compounds in a timely, ethical, and stakeholder-focused manner. Shapes the medical plan and supports the Medical Affairs strategy and plan by gathering external stakeholder insights. Engages HCPs to meet scientific, educational, and research needs and provides emerging data in response to inquiries.
Key Duties And Responsibilities:
- Develop and foster trusted relationships with Thought Leaders and appropriate HCPs; leverage relationships across and within academic centers.
- Incorporate all aspects of the Scientific Engagement Model (SEM) into interactions.
- Apply the medical plan to interactions/territory planning and capture feedback in CRM to inform internal stakeholders.
- Use CRM/data analytics for timely capture of interaction details and to manage workload.
- Communicate scientific information compliantly at an advanced level.
- Use in-depth payer knowledge to understand impact on patient care delivery.
- Support clinical development/operations (IB content, SIV meetings, trial site nominations, end-of-study data reviews).
- Represent at medical congresses (session/abstract coverage, booth staffing, TL interactions, congress summaries, debrief; may lead logistics).
- Mentor/train colleagues; support onboarding.
- Conduct activities in compliance with Vertex policies and complete required administrative tasks.
Knowledge And Skills/Qualifications:
- Deliver high-quality results on time; plan projects in a changing environment; create solutions.
- Appraise medical/scientific literature; present clinical/scientific information credibly.
- Knowledge of territory; healthcare regulatory environment; Microsoft Office; matrix work.
- Apply disease/disease management and competitor knowledge to articulate medical/scientific value.
- Demonstrated understanding of compliance/regulatory frameworks.
- Knowledge of payers, Health Economics & Outcomes Research.
- Fluent in English & local language (oral/written); valid driver’s license.
- Travel up to 70% overnight (including occasional weekends).
Education And Experience:
- Advanced biomedical/life sciences degree (e.g., Masters, NP, PA).
- Typically 5+ years as an MSL or in other pharma/biotech medical affairs roles (or equivalent combination).
- Therapeutic area training/experience helpful.
