Brief Description:
The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) is a field-based extension of US Medical Affairs. The MSL develops professional relationships with medical thought leaders, provides medical information via scientific exchange, and delivers clinical/scientific support.
Coverage: Northern California, Washington, Oregon, Alaska, Idaho, & Montana.
Essential Functions:
- Identify and develop peer-to-peer relationships with KOLs and healthcare providers
- Develop and execute territory plans aligned with US Medical Affairs plans
- Identify and communicate key clinical/research insights from KOLs to appropriate departments
- Provide medical education via on-site presentations, investigator meetings, conferences, advisory boards, or regional meetings
- Provide scientific support for medical congress staffing, advisory boards, and sales training initiatives
- Maintain high-level knowledge of therapy area, Jazz products, emerging research, trends, and competitive landscape
- Establish reputation as a trustworthy scientific/medical information source
- Support Jazz positioning as scientific authority; attend scientific congresses
- Provide clinical presentations and information in response to unsolicited questions
- Communicate emerging data and clinical experience objectively; discuss benefits/risks
- Support data generation activities (company-sponsored studies, collaborations, ISTs)
- Contribute to US Medical Plan development and local strategies/tactics
- Manage relevant budget where needed and collaborate cross-functionally for Key Account Management
- Interact with HCPs on advisory boards, speaker development, and clinical trials
- Document and forward adverse events and product complaints per policy; adhere to Codes of Practice; act with integrity; follow mission/values; maintain written development plan; prepare timely reporting
Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Research and critically analyze/communicate complex scientific/medical data
- Clear communication and presentation skills; strong planning/organization; attention to detail
- Strategic mindset; self-motivated; learn quickly and work in rapidly changing environments
- Excellent negotiation; relationship building/networking/collaboration
- Strong digital tool/platform capabilities; excellent spoken English
- Travel at least 60% of workdays (driving required)
Preferred:
- Knowledge of geography/healthcare environment and external experts
- Ability to develop trust with opinion leaders
- Understanding of regulatory requirements for field-based personnel
- Oncology experience
- Proven MSL track record
Education/Licenses:
- Advanced degree (PharmD, MD, PhD, or equivalent) + 3+ years in therapeutic area
- License (RN/NP/CNP/PA or equivalent) + Master’s (or equivalent) + 5+ years clinical practice
- 2+ years as an MSL or comparable industry/clinical role
- Willing to travel 60–70%; valid driver’s license; live within 60 miles of a major airport

- Base pay range: $160,000.00–$240,000.00
- Potential discretionary bonus/incentive and discretionary equity
