Brief Description
The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) is a field-based extension of the US Medical Affairs organization. The MSL develops relationships with medical thought leaders, provides medical information through scientific exchange, and delivers clinical/scientific support for Jazz Pharmaceuticals and the Medical Affairs department.
Essential Functions
- Identify and develop peer-to-peer relationships with KOLs and healthcare providers.
- Develop and execute territory plans aligned with US Medical Affairs plans.
- Identify and communicate key clinical and research issues from KOLs to appropriate departments.
- Provide medical education for HCPs via on-site presentations, investigator meetings, national conferences, advisory boards, or regional meetings.
- Provide scientific support for medical congress staffing, advisory boards, and sales training initiatives.
- Maintain expert, up-to-date knowledge of the therapy area, products, research trends, and competitive landscape.
- Build trust as a scientific/medical information source; support Jazz’s positioning as a scientific authority.
- Acquire understanding of clinical practice protocols and disease management trends in the US.
- Deliver clinical presentations and respond to unsolicited questions in group/one-on-one settings.
- Communicate emerging data objectively (benefits/risks) and support data generation activities (company-sponsored studies, collaborations, ISTs).
- Contribute to development of the US Medical Plan and local strategies; manage relevant budget where needed.
- Collaborate cross-functionally and support Key Account Management; interact with HCPs on advisory boards, speaker development, and clinical trials.
- Enhance Jazz’s image as an advocate for medical advancement through meaningful scientific exchange.
- Document and forward adverse events/product complaints per policy; adhere to national/local Codes of Practice; act ethically and as an ambassador for Jazz values; maintain development plan and provide timely reporting.
Required
- Ability to research, analyze, and communicate complex scientific/medical data.
- Clear communication/presentation; strong planning/organization and attention to detail.
- Strategic mindset; self-motivated and able to work autonomously.
- Ability to learn quickly, be flexible, and results-focused.
- Excellent negotiation skills; strong relationship-building/networking/collaboration.
- Strong digital platform/tool capability; excellent spoken English.
- Travel: at least 60% of workdays (driving required).
Preferred
- Knowledge of healthcare environment and external experts; strong relationship development with opinion leaders.
- Understanding of regulatory requirements for field-based personnel.
- Oncology experience.
- Prior MSL experience with a strong success track record.
Required/Preferred Education and Licenses
- Advanced degree (PharmD, MD, PhD or equivalent) + at least 3 years’ therapeutic-area experience.
- License (RN/NP/CNP/PA or equivalent) + Master’s degree (or equivalent) + at least 5 years’ clinical practice.
- Minimum 2 years’ experience as an MSL or comparable industry/clinical role.
- Field role: travel 60–70% time; valid driver’s license; live within 60 miles of a major airport.
