External Partner Engagement and Qualification
- Support qualification and screening of external partners through Lilly Research Labs (LRL) risk management oversight program (PQA), evaluating HSE capabilities for alignment with HSE regulatory requirements and Lilly HSE expectations.
- Lead HSE screening by initiating outreach, distributing tailored HSE questionnaires, and conducting virtual assessments.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with internal LRL teams (discovery, small molecule, biologics, devices, clinical development, packaging) to identify and mitigate HSE risks prior to project initiation.
Onsite External Partner Assessment and Support
- Coordinate assessment scheduling across multiple time zones.
- Assist with comprehensive HSE capability/risk assessments across evaluation rubrics: environmental management, industrial hygiene, HSE management systems, general safety, emergency preparedness, and process safety management.
- Prepare HSE risk assessment reports with findings, improvement opportunities, and action items.
- Support CAPA tracking (monitor responses, timelines, verify completion, maintain closure documentation).
- Support partner performance reviews (prepare performance summaries).
- Assist with ongoing HSE monitoring via routine re-assessments (virtual and onsite).
Technical HSE Consultation and Resource
- Serve as HSE subject matter expert/technical consultant for external partner HSE risk management.
- Advise on complex HSE challenges (e.g., exposure and containment strategy development/planning).
- Facilitate HSE information exchange between LRL and external partners.
- Act as HSE liaison during partner incidents (response coordination, investigation, corrective action oversight).
Program Development and Continuous Improvement
- Maintain and evolve assessment tools/processes and program communications.
- Lead development of digital tools/automation to streamline assessments, improve data quality, and reporting.
- Support process standardization (workflows, templates, change management).
- Monitor emerging HSE and Discovery/R&D issues to identify/manage risk and inform policy/priorities.
Strategic Collaboration and Internal Alignment
- Participate in cross-functional teams supporting LRL initiatives involving external partner engagement.
- Support benchmarking and industry collaboration activities with PSCI.
Basic Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Health and Safety, Engineering, Sciences, or related HSE field.
- 5+ years’ HSE experience.
- 3+ years’ experience in third-party/contractor HSE management with assessment or auditing oversight.
Additional Skills/Preferences
- Master’s degree in related field.
- Deep technical HSE knowledge in industrial hygiene and exposure control plus at least one other evaluation rubric; preferably in R&D pharmaceutical/biotech environments.
- Working knowledge of HSE evaluation rubrics and ability to build expertise.
- Strong cross-cultural communication and partner engagement.
- Ability to manage complex logistics across time zones and regulatory frameworks.
- Excellent written/verbal communication.
- Preferred certifications: CIH, CSP, CHMM, or equivalent.
- Ability to assess HSE risks across discovery, small molecule/biologics, devices, clinical operations, and packaging.
- Proficiency interpreting technical documentation and synthesizing into actionable reports.
- Advanced analytical/problem-solving and practical solution development.
- Project management skills (manage multiple assessments while meeting quality/deadlines).
- Technology proficiency (databases, digital assessment tools).
- Flexibility and learning agility.
Additional Information
- Domestic and international travel required; anticipate up to ~50%.
