Position Summary
Histology Technologist I assists pathology professionals with Immunohistochemistry (IHC), specimen processing, embedding, slide preparation, microtomy, and other high-complexity lab procedures under direct supervision.
Role Responsibilities
- Perform routine histology tasks: embedding, cutting, H&E staining, cover slipping.
- Perform high-complexity testing: grossing, processing, IHC staining using automatic staining systems; ensure QC of stained slides.
- Execute lab protocols/SOPs; complete required training and routine competencies.
- Maintain specimen diagnostic viability and correct patient labeling (verify case ID numbers, match blocks/slides at each step; print labels).
- Document activities in lab logs and the LIS.
- Maintain equipment in proper working order; notify leadership for maintenance/repairs.
- Identify and address issues affecting test performance/reporting.
- Assist with related duties and special projects as needed.
Required Qualifications
- 1+ years IHC/histology lab experience OR 2 years as Histology Technician Trainee OR 1 year as Histology Technician Trainee plus completion of an NAACLS-accredited Histology program.
- High-complexity education/clinical training option: bachelorβs (chemical/biological/clinical/medical lab science or medical technology) OR associate in lab science/medical lab tech OR 60+ semester hours including specified science/chemistry/MLT coursework AND completion of ABHES/CAAHEP-approved/accredited clinical laboratory training OR at least 3 months documented IHC/histology high-complexity training.
Preferred Qualifications
- HT/HTL (ASCP) certification eligible.
- QIHC strongly advised.
Required Skills
- Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and basic internet use.
- Strong verbal/written communication, attention to detail, teamwork, customer service focus.
- Ability to multitask in fast-paced, deadline-driven conditions.
- Knowledge of lab safety for biohazards/chemicals and quality control procedures.
