Role Summary

Franchise Head, GI at AstraZeneca. Leadership role within Medical Affairs to channel scientific capabilities and drive impact on patient outcomes in oncology, with a focus on the GI franchise.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver a coordinated and timely medical evidence plan that supports the oncology cycle management plan within the therapeutic area, addressing the needs of payors, prescribers, and patients, including observational, interventional, and managed care-related research.
  • Lead and manage the medical team, fostering an environment that champions innovation and high performance.
  • Oversee Medical Affairs direct reports and field/hq teams developing Medical Strategies and delivering Medical Plans for cancer compounds, including support for external interactions such as promotional review, speaker programs, and medical science liaison activities.
  • Empower the team with clear goals, responsibilities, talent development/retention, and continuous improvement.
  • Encourage interdependent teamwork within AZ and beyond to promote co-ownership of strategic objectives in cancer relevant to marketing, sales, and global constituencies.
  • Identify best practices and capture innovative ideas in Medical Affairs, and share them enterprise-wide; be accountable for medical insight generation input to TA, Product, and Brand teams.
  • Oversee opinion leader engagement to discuss therapy area and product strategy, generating insights into unmet patient needs, including engagement with medical associations to provide cancer insights.
  • Engage strategically in the future of medicine within the TA with partners such as real-world evidence, managed markets, government affairs, and advocacy teams.
  • Participate as needed in Business Development activities within the TA.

Qualifications

  • Essential: Sophisticated Scientific Degree (MBBS, PharmD, PhD, or MD) or equivalent education
  • Essential: Specialty training with 7+ years of relevant clinical experience in the Therapeutic Area
  • Essential: 5-10+ years of pharmaceutical experience including leadership positions in Medical Affairs and/or R&D
  • Essential: Experience leading cross-functional teams including field teams
  • Essential: Strong opinion leader engagement experience
  • Desirable: Phase 3b/4 and post-approval research including patient registries and REMS programs
  • Desirable: Translational medicine, population-based real-world research
  • Desirable: Bridging with coordinated care management and quality improvement pathways
  • Desirable: Understanding of Health Outcomes Research including patient-reported outcomes

Skills

  • Expertise in medical affairs leadership, cross-functional collaboration, and strategic medical planning
  • Strong stakeholder engagement with thought leaders and professional societies
  • Ability to translate scientific data into actionable medical insights and strategies

Education

  • Advanced clinical or scientific degree as listed in Essential Qualifications

Additional Requirements

  • In-person work expectation: minimum three days per week in the office, with flexibility for individual needs
