Executive Director, R&D Communications (preferred based in California)
Key responsibilities:
- Lead development and execution of Amgen’s global R&D communications strategy, aligned with enterprise priorities and scientific objectives
- Serve as a strategic advisor to senior R&D leaders (including EVP of R&D) on reputation, visibility, and scientific storytelling
- Partner with R&D leadership core planning team to map and deliver against internal/external news flow
- Oversee thought leadership on R&D innovation, data, and partnerships across scientific, medical, and business channels
- Partner with Corporate Affairs, Medical, Regulatory, and Investor Relations to ensure message alignment and compliance
- Build and sustain a high-performing R&D communications team (~6 staff) focused on collaboration, scientific literacy, and storytelling excellence
- Lead internal R&D engagement and connect 4,000+ R&D employees to mission, strategy, and scientific priorities
- Oversee integrated communications for major R&D events and programs (scientific conferences, pipeline showcases, publications, milestones)
- Develop metrics to assess impact and continuously optimize strategies
- Advance use of innovative technologies (including Comtech and AI platforms/tools)
- Manage external PR agency partnerships to execute priorities and deliver measurable impact
Basic qualifications:
- Doctorate degree + 6 years of Corporate Affairs or Scientific Communications OR
- Master’s degree + 10 years of Corporate Affairs or Scientific Communications OR
- Bachelor’s degree + 12 years of Corporate Affairs or Scientific Communications AND
- 6 years of managerial experience directly managing people and/or leadership experience leading teams/projects/programs or directing resource allocation
Preferred qualifications:
- PhD in Biological or Biomedical science discipline
- 15+ years of scientific/medical/R&D communications experience in biotechnology/pharmaceutical industry
- Ability to translate complex science into accessible, compelling narratives for diverse audiences
- Experience advising senior scientific leaders; managing communications around data, publications, and clinical milestones
- Issues management, reputation building, and proactive thought leadership
- Leadership in matrixed, global environments; strategic/analytical/storytelling skills with scientific rigor
- Experience leading teams/agency partners and large-scale projects under tight timelines; strong writing/messaging
- Comfort navigating ambiguity and delivering innovative communication solutions
