The Executive Director, Publications & Medical Communications is a key member of the medical affairs leadership team, leading publication and medical communication initiatives, including strategy, medical activities, and tactical execution. Accountable for developing medical communication materials with focus on Medical Information Activities, Medical Information Contact Center Services, medical review, and input into Materials Approval Process (MAP) for promotional materials and Medical Review Process (MedRP) for medical materials. Responsible for strategic planning and execution of scientific publications and medical/scientific communications across therapeutic areas/assets. Ensures timely delivery of high-quality, integrated medical/scientific information to internal/external partners and the healthcare community. Leads and develops direct/indirect reports, including contractors/consultants and external medical writers/partners; leads cross-functional meetings and initiatives.
Essential Job Functions:
- Identify healthcare community needs and education gaps; prioritize and address using appropriate materials/channels.
- Coach/lead/mentor direct reports; support professional development and performance management.
- Lead medical information services and manage intake of inquiries and requests.
- Develop high-quality medical/scientific information (response letters, FAQs, AMCP Dossiers, etc.) and ensure up-to-date communication delivery methods.
- Monitor and recommend improvements for Medical Information Contact Center operations.
- Lead presence at scientific meetings/product booths; gather and report insights.
- Conduct gap analysis to advise/modify fulfillment strategies.
- Lead medical review operations and MAP/MedRP input.
- Lead publications & medical communications capabilities: manage projects, budgets, and external partners.
- Develop and execute publication strategies/plans/tactics/budgets.
- Oversee medical writers/external partners for timely, compliant deliverables per publication policy.
- Lead publication team and cross-functional meetings; support medical affairs/communications meetings.
- Maintain subject matter expertise and establish collaborations across functions.
- Maintain compliant planning/workflow files, tools, and systems; stay current on best practices and ethical guidelines.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Advanced degree (PhD, PharmD, or Masterβs) required.
- 15+ years medical/scientific publications or medical communications experience in pharma/healthcare/academia required.
- 5+ years director-level experience leading medical affairs/medical communications teams.
- Recognized leader/expert in medical publications and medical affairs practices.
- Demonstrated expertise in publication structure/content/quality and in regulations/best practices; expert scientific/biomedical writing.
- Working knowledge of statistical concepts; ability to interpret clinical data.
- Knowledge of multi-channel scientific platforms and innovative tactics.
- Preferred: CMPP/AMWA; medical affairs/communications fellowship or residency.
Working Conditions:
- Hybrid in Chicago office; at least 3 days/week (on-site may change).
- Occasional evenings/weekends; travel up to 25%.
