Position: Senior Director – Osteoporosis, Women’s Health
Location: Boston, MA or Indianapolis, IN
Position Summary
- Serve as scientific and strategic leader for osteoporosis preclinical discovery.
- Define, implement, and continuously evolve Lilly’s preclinical discovery strategy for osteoporosis, integrating human biology, translational science, and preclinical models; advance programs from target identification through preclinical development toward early clinical translation.
Key Responsibilities
Strategy Leadership
- Build and lead an innovative lab to identify and validate osteoporosis targets/pathways; bring high-potential targets into the pipeline.
- Define and implement preclinical discovery strategy, including target discovery/validation/prioritization frameworks, experimental approaches, and decision criteria.
- Drive portfolio prioritization (differentiation, risk, clinical/regulatory alignment).
- Build and evolve preclinical/translational capabilities (internal/external).
- Shape external opportunities (academic collaborations, CRO partnerships, business development).
- Ensure alignment with Women’s Health and musculoskeletal portfolio objectives.
Scientific & Project Leadership
- Lead discovery programs (target identification, validation, therapeutic candidate progression).
- Design end-to-end experiments across in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo systems.
- Generate decision-enabling data for advancement and portfolio decisions.
Translational Strategy
- Define and implement translational approaches linking mechanisms to clinical outcomes (biomarkers, PK/PD).
- Incorporate endpoints such as bone density, bone strength, and microarchitecture to enable clinical differentiation.
Cross-functional & External Engagement
- Serve as biology lead on cross-functional teams; influence decisions to accelerate progression.
- Lead/manage collaborations with CROs and academic partners; maintain scientific leadership via publications and presentations.
People Leadership
- Recruit, supervise, mentor, and manage performance and career development.
Basic Qualifications
- Ph.D. in a relevant subject area.
- 10+ years of relevant experience in academia, industry, or related field.
Additional Preferences
- Deep expertise in osteoporosis and skeletal biology (bone remodeling).
- 10 years’ experience after post-doc training.
- Demonstrated success in drug discovery from target identification through preclinical development.
- Proven track record shaping discovery strategy and influencing portfolio decisions.
- Strong experience with osteoporosis preclinical in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo models.
- Experience building new capabilities/platforms and external collaborations.
- Strong cross-functional leadership and scientific communication skills.
- Passion for unmet needs in women’s health.
