The Director of External Funding leads the assessment and execution of external funding programs, Independent Medical Education (IME), and Medical Affairs-led Memberships, Grants & Sponsorships. Ensures HCRO funding activities uphold scientific integrity, align to enterprise and therapeutic area objectives, and comply with regulatory and internal requirements. Serves as functional expert and primary point of contact, partnering across Medical Affairs, Legal, Compliance and external scientific/educational HCRO organizations.
Responsibilities:
- Oversee the USMA external funding program, aligned to medical affairs objectives, therapeutic area priorities, and annual budget (allocation, disbursements, ROI/impact).
- Define and maintain funding priorities, criteria, governance, decision-making frameworks, and KPIs preserving scientific independence and regulatory compliance.
- Lead scientific and strategic assessment of proposals; provide documented funding recommendations and rationales.
- Ensure activities meet applicable laws and guidance (FDA, OIG/AdvaMed), Sunshine/aggregate reporting, and company policies/SOPs; keep documentation audit-ready.
- Partner with USMA relationship leads as primary point of contact for non-promotional education partners; communicate processes, criteria, and compliance requirements.
- Collaborate with medical leads, Legal, Compliance, HEOR, Field Medical, Medical Strategy, and SMEs.
- Establish learning outcomes and KPIs; translate insights to medical strategy, scientific communications, and field teams.
- Maintain a balanced portfolio across education types, partners, and therapeutic areas; forecast needs and adjust resources.
- Identify risks to scientific independence/reputation; lead mitigation, policy updates, training, and audit responses.
- Drive continuous improvement across the funding lifecycle; ensure data accuracy and ongoing audit readiness.
Qualifications:
- Bachelorβs degree in scientific/medical/clinical field.
- 8+ years in science, medical, or pharmaceutical/biotechnology.
- Experience managing IME, grant funding programs, or grant-funded medical educational programs.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Advanced degree.
- 3+ years in pharma/biotech industry (medical affairs or related) with operational leadership managing external funding/grants or compliance-related functions.
- Experience with medical educational design and adult learning principles.
