Role Summary
Director, Federal Government Affairs. Represents AbbVie’s interests before the U.S. Government with a focus on the Executive Branch, designing and executing comprehensive advocacy strategies to advance AbbVie priorities across policies impacting the company and investments in unmet medical needs.
Responsibilities
- Develop, implement and track progress across cross-functional teams on business-critical strategies for the enterprise.
- Implement strategies in consultation with relevant business personnel and, when appropriate, in coordination with external coalitions and trade associations.
- Proactively evaluate the executive, regulatory and legislative environment for potential impact to AbbVie and the patients we serve.
- Stay apprised of business goals and strategies to identify opportunities; consult with appropriate business and corporate personnel and lead recommendations and action plans.
- Cultivate and maintain relationships with key Administration personnel; assist with Congressional outreach where needed.
- Enhance management and Business Unit understanding of and participation in the federal policymaking process.
- Collaborate with Business Units on critical issues, leveraging senior leadership and internal experts to advance AbbVie positions.
- Participate in formulation and implementation of the plan for AbbVie PAC.
Qualifications
- Basic Requirements: Bachelor’s Degree (B.A. / B.S.); Advanced Degree (J.D., M.A., M.B.A.) preferred.
- At least 10 years of experience working with Congress and/or the Administration.
- Significant Administration relationships to lead engagement with key policymaking personnel.
- Ability to master complex policy and legislative issues, think creatively and develop innovative strategies and solutions.
- Knowledge of the U.S. health care system and issues impacting the pharmaceutical industry; familiarity with Medicare/Medicaid, access and reimbursement, and therapeutic areas such as immunology and oncology; IP and tax knowledge preferred.
- Excellent written and oral communications skills; ability to convey complex information clearly via emails, memoranda and slides.
- Advanced analytical skills to assess policy issues and their impact on AbbVie.
- Ability to create, implement, and track comprehensive GA strategies including lobbying, association engagement, and third-party advocacy.
- Demonstrated success in working in teams; strong strategic thinking, decision-making and tactical skills to develop broad policy options and recommendations.
