Role Summary
Director Engineering & Design - Standard Design Platforms leads the standardization of building infrastructure design for Engineering & Property Services (E&PS) across Johnson & Johnson. The role owns the SDP technology strategy for architecture and engineering disciplines, develops design standards to meet safety and regulatory requirements while optimizing lifecycle costs, and guides the deployment of SDP across projects. This position collaborates with regional/corporate E&PS teams, business IT, and other J&J functions to implement governance across E&PS scope. This hybrid role is available at Johnson & Johnson manufacturing sites across the United States; candidates from any location may apply.
Responsibilities
- Lead team of Subject Matter Experts in Architecture, HVAC, Electrical Power, Lighting, Building Automation, Clean Utilities, Black Utilities, Fire and Structural Engineering in the standardization of the design of building infrastructure.
- Own the E&PD technology strategy for each architecture and engineering disciplines.
- Develop design standards to meet safety and regulatory requirements, optimize lifecycle costs including energy, maintenance and operational, and ensure quality standards.
- Deploy high quality project design by training design teams on the SDP toolkit, engage suppliers early in design, participate on design teams to support key decisions, ensure design documents contain necessary scope.
- Resolve design escalations in engineering standard disciplines.
- Manage professional resources to support development and deployment of SDP’s.
- Develop strategies to support projects including hiring internal and external experts in the various architecture/engineering disciplines.
- Partner with procurement to develop and manage strategic agreements with suppliers and contractors, to leverage application engineering services and deploy engineering standards globally.
- Support Engineering and Design leaders in the support of regional and strategic projects.
- Ensure SDP team SME’s act as Single Point of Contact (SPoC) for industry and J&J internal engineering expertise in their respective disciplines.
- Establish Center of Excellence (CoE) teams to resolve operations issues, identify modifications and support local long term plans in areas that are practical and appropriate.
- Ensure SME’s participate in appropriate external professional organizations to research and develop new solutions and professional standards (i.e. AIA, ISPE, ASME, ASHRAE, USGBC).
- Organize organizational training sessions to improve awareness of our SDP initiatives and the engagement of our preferred Suppliers.
- Ensure our SDP leaders create SDP’s that are: User friendly for AE firms to quickly use and implement with new designs; updated to meet business needs including changing regulatory requirements, new user requirements, new acquisitions and new industrial technology improvements; coordinated with our Preferred Suppliers so they can quickly expedite purchase, fabrication and installation of our respective equipment or system; Updated to include input from CoE teams and new JNJ organizational programs.
- Prioritize SDP project support of E&PS projects.
- Coordinate with E&PS E&D team leadership to ensure projects are properly prioritized with resources granted to the SDP team by E&PS leadership.
- Ensure SME’s participate on key project design teams to review engineering designs during BOD to ensure SDP compliance, assist with preferred supplier technical escalations.
- Ensure SME’s support startup and operational issues as to participate in quality and regulatory investigations and correct operational issues.
- Collaborate with JNJ organization leaders to create and deploy global initiatives such as of the EHS – Environmental – Sustainability Policy and Safety programs to develop practical and innovative technology strategies in the areas of energy conservation and sustainability and develop discipline safety programs to ensure consistency across organization.
- Collaborate with JNJ organization leaders to create and deploy global initiatives including Risk – Factory Mutual to ensure compliance and adoption of requirements for high risk areas such as Seismic, Fire protection, and Explosion prevention.
- Deploy additional initiatives such as Real Estate to develop process for Fire Safety and Seismic evaluations of potential properties; Sterility Assurance to provide compliance support and deployment of quality standards related to process systems such as clean utilities and clean rooms; IT to ensure compliance with network standards and ISRM requirements for BMS/EMS systems and Procurement to leverage J&J's buying power through standardization and supplier agreements.
Education
- University/Bachelor’s degree or equivalent required; Degree in Architecture or Engineering is required.
- Multiple and/or elevated degree(s) is preferred.
Skills
- Minimum of twelve (12) years of related experience with engineering design and construction.
- Minimum of eight (8) years of related project management experience.
- Solid project management skills, proven organization, coordination, and action tracking skills; including project management processes, tools, and methodologies.
- Demonstrated expertise in technically managing global preferred suppliers across multiple projects and regions.
- Demonstrated expertise in developing and deploying standard design methodologies across large organizations.
- Excellent technical and analytical skills.
- Deep understanding of our E&PS infrastructure and operating processes.

- This position will require up to 25% domestic and international travel.
