Position Summary
Partners with the Global Program Lead (GPL) and Global Project Manager (GPM) to co-lead strategic and operational planning and decision-making with a BMS Global Program Team (GPT) in late development; may serve as the lead GPM on early stage assets. Provides content expertise for timing, costs, and resources; delivers program milestones and goals. Operational lead for development and lifecycle management programs to ensure cross-functional effectiveness and champion BMS’ operating model.
General Expectations (Drug Development Project Manager)
- Partner with GPL and Global Project Manager to lead GPT sub-teams and drive integrated, efficient, cross-functional execution plans.
- Coordinate and plan GPT activities: milestone setting, budget forecasting, resource planning, scenario planning, and integrated program plan development.
- Facilitate team goal setting and tracking to ensure adherence to plan/strategy.
- Manage GPT and GPT sub-teams to track integrated deliverables and prepare for governance interactions at inflection points.
- Accountable for integrated cross-functional planning: operational strategy, timelines, budget, quality, and risk assessment/mitigation.
- Provide best-in-class operations/project management expertise and shape project strategy for portfolio value.
Associate Director, PM (Early Development/Late Development)
- Accountable for one or more GPTs and moderate-complexity sub-teams; expected to be autonomous day-to-day.
- Maintain cross-functional development plan, timeline, and budget; ensure progress vs. plan.
- Facilitate science-based business decisions; generate and evaluate development scenarios/options and their downstream impacts.
- Proactively identify risks and ensure mitigation plans are implemented.
- Communicate transparently and timely to team and stakeholders.
- Foster high-performing teams with GPL; monitor team health and create team norms/operating principles.
- Develop and coordinate resource and budget planning across functions.
- Advise on governance expectations; prepare for key decision discussions with cross-functional input.
- Work with strategic alliance partners (for jointly developed projects).
- Coach team members/PM colleagues; develop talent pipeline for GPT membership.
- Drive continuous improvement and transformational initiatives within the PM function.
Qualifications & Experience
- Advanced degree (Ph.D. desirable) in Life Sciences/Chemical Sciences/Physical Sciences or relevant discipline; PMP certification desirable. BS/MS in scientific discipline plus 8+ years drug development experience considered.
- Cell Therapy experience (at the asset level) strongly preferred.
- 10+ years biotech/pharmaceutical/health care industry experience; project/portfolio management or cross-functional matrix leadership a plus.
- Proven track record managing complex early and/or late phase drug development programs; strong disease area and development pathway understanding.
- Expert understanding of end-to-end drug development processes and product value assessment.
- Leadership skills: situational leadership; influence without authority.
- Ability to lead matrix teams and operate strategically with GPL.
- Experience with project management tools (e.g., Microsoft Project).
- Strong communication; tailor messages to senior leaders; prepare governance-ready documents/presentations.
- Ability to resolve complex problems and handle difficult stakeholder situations.
- Ability to lead critical path analyses and scenario planning.
- Excellent written/verbal English; strong organization, attention to detail, and ability to balance competing priorities.
