Associate Director – Engineering (Automation) responsibilities for a greenfield GMP API manufacturing startup site in Houston, TX.
Responsibilities
Pre-Startup and Startup Phase:
- Attract, hire, and onboard top talent to the Process Control Engineering team.
- Build the organization and culture to operate to the highest standards of safety, quality, and operational excellence.
- Develop and implement business systems and processes needed to run the site.
- Establish lean practices and a continuous improvement mindset.
- Support the project team with design feedback, commissioning & qualification strategies, and automation deliverables.
- Collaborate to ensure decisions meet project deliverables and longer-term site goals.
- Organize and implement strategy for standard automation and process control operating procedures (SOPs).
- Plan and manage business operational expenses, capital, and headcount targets.
Post-Startup:
- Supervise and coach the process control team (performance reviews and development plans).
- Staffing: recruiting, resource planning, and succession planning.
- Coordinate process control work.
- Review and monitor financial performance and commit to targets.
- Develop and implement the Process Control Engineering Business Plan.
- Demonstrate EHS commitment (including PSM) and ensure team compliance.
- Identify, track, and report key functional performance indicators.
- Set and reinforce standards for rigor in automation work products.
- Review/approve automation-related deviations and change controls; review/approve automation and process control SOPs.
- Ensure technical review/approval for documents (investigations, change controls, regulatory submissions, validations, procedures, control strategies).
- Interact with regulators/customers/external stakeholders and support agency audits.
- Network globally to share best practices and harmonize control strategies.
- Participate in flow leadership and develop future management/technical expert leaders.
Basic Qualifications
- Minimum B.S. in Engineering (preferably Chemical Engineering)
- 5+ years Process Control and Automation Engineering experience (preferably in API manufacturing)
- 3+ years related leadership experience
Additional Skills/Preferences
- Automation platform experience: Rockwell Automation and Emerson DeltaV
- Ability to instill teamwork and demonstrate strong interpersonal skills
- Ability to apply technical depth and rigor to deliverables
- Recruiting/retention experience using organizational models
- Ability to make independent decisions and network appropriately
- Ability to function as a leader within management and teams
- Professional Engineer licensure not required but encouraged
