Job Summary (Primary Function)
- The Animal Care Technician III partners with in-vivo scientists on requested technical procedures such as dosing, sample and data collection, or surgical support, and ensures studies are conducted according to approved animal use protocols and general practices.
Key Responsibilities (Essential Functions)
- Review, comprehend, and comply with all laboratory animal procedures; follow applicable animal use protocols and general practices. With oversight of the LAR Supervisor, liaise directly with in-vivo scientists.
- Proficient in aseptic techniques and perioperative care for rodent surgery.
- Perform animal husbandry duties as needed.
- Perform basic measurements related to in-vivo studies (e.g., body weight, tumor size).
- Participate in necropsy and tissue collection.
- Train staff under the direction of LAR management.
Qualifications
Required
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
- 3+ years of hands-on animal study/technical support and applicable instrumentation.
Preferred
- Bachelorβs degree in Life Sciences, or Associate degree/certificate program in Life Sciences with appropriate experience.
- AALAS Certification (LAT or LATG).
Skills/Competencies
- Follow verbal and written instructions; strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Knowledge of basic clinical signs for rats and mice and ability to report accurate information to scientists, LAR management, or a veterinarian.
- Professional conduct; maintain a positive work atmosphere.
- Proficient with electronic data collection systems (e.g., Path Data, Study Log) and manual documentation.
- Proficient in dosing techniques.
- Proficient in approved methods of euthanasia.
- Knowledgeable in proper rodent restraint methods.
- Strong organization and attention to detail.
- Strong written and verbal English communication.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
Physical/Work Schedule Requirements
- Stand; use hands to handle/reach; walk and stoop/kneel/crouch/crawl.
- Regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- Weekends and holidays required on a rotating basis.
