Role Summary

Regional Director, Field Medical is a field-based Medical Affairs leader responsible for leading, developing, coaching, and enabling a high-performing regional team of Medical Science Liaisons within an assigned U.S. region. This role translates Medical Affairs strategy into effective field execution while ensuring scientific excellence, compliant practices, and meaningful stakeholder engagement. The Regional Director partners closely with Medical Affairs leadership and cross-functional stakeholders to ensure high-quality scientific exchange and engagement with Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) and healthcare professionals (HCPs). This position requires leadership experience, deep understanding of the pharmaceutical/biotech environment, familiarity with healthcare system complexities, and significant field medical experience within cardiology, renal, or metabolic diseases. Travel approximately 50–70%; field-based role within driving distance of a major international airport; company operates with fully remote structure.

Responsibilities

  • Directly manage, coach, and mentor a team of MSLs within an assigned region, providing ongoing performance feedback, development planning, and field coaching to enhance scientific acumen, engagement quality, and professional growth
  • Recruit, onboard, develop, and retain a high-performing team of MSLs, fostering a culture of scientific rigor, accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement
  • Ensure consistent execution of MSL core responsibilities, scientific engagement standards, and compliance expectations across the region
  • Establish clear performance expectations and development plans aligned with medical strategy and organizational priorities
  • Partner with Medical Affairs leadership and Director, Field Medical Training to support MSL onboarding, training, and ongoing professional development
  • Conduct regular field rides, virtual touchpoints, and performance reviews to assess effectiveness and alignment with Medical Affairs objectives
  • Foster an inclusive, collaborative, and high-performance team culture

Qualifications

  • Education: Advanced scientific or clinical degree (PharmD, PhD, MD required; other relevant advanced degrees considered)
  • Required: Minimum 5-7 years of experience in Medical Affairs or field-based scientific roles within biotech or pharmaceutical organizations
  • Required: Minimum 3–5 years of MSL experience, with prior people management or field leadership experience strongly preferred
  • Required: Demonstrated ability to lead and develop field-based teams in a highly regulated environment
  • Required: Strong operational leadership, coaching, and performance management skills
  • Required: Deep understanding of the MSL function, scientific exchange, and compliance requirements
  • Required: Strong understanding of the pharmaceutical and healthcare landscape, including clinical research, medical governance, regulatory, and compliance frameworks
  • Required: Excellent scientific communication, strategic thinking, and interpersonal skills
  • Preferred: Therapeutic experience in cardiology, renal, metabolic, or related disease areas
  • Preferred: Experience supporting medical launch activities, or pre-commercial organizations highly desirable
  • Preferred: Ability to translate complex scientific and clinical data into clear, relevant messages
  • Preferred: Excellent interpersonal, presentation, and written communication skills
  • Preferred: Proven ability to collaborate cross-functionally and influence without authority
  • Preferred: Strategic mindset with strong executional discipline

Education
