Description Overview
The Technical Writer supports documentation creation and revision activities related to production processes, equipment operation, cleaning, testing, forms, logs, attachments, checklists, and other controlled documents. The role assesses training/capability impact, captures operational knowledge, improves usability of instructions, and supports effective implementation of process changes.

Scope of the Role
Controlled Documentation & Technical Writing
- Recommend, draft, revise, and maintain SOPs, standard work instructions, work aids, logs, forms, attachments, checklists, and other controlled documentation.
- Prepare clear written descriptions of work processes using approved formats/templates.
- Fulfill document change requests; communicate barriers, resource needs, and timeline risks.
- Ensure documents meet quality, compliance, operational, and site requirements.

Training Impact & Change Implementation
- Evaluate documentation changes to determine training/retraining/communication/performance support needs.
- Identify affected roles, departments, and impacted employee populations.
- Partner with Training & Development, Master Trainers, Quality, Engineering, and Operations to implement changes.
- Support readiness planning for engineering changes, continuous improvement, CAPAs, new equipment, and procedural updates.

SME Interviewing, Knowledge Capture & Standardization
- Interview SMEs to understand processes, critical steps, decision points, common errors, and gaps.
- Capture tacit knowledge and translate it into standardized documentation and learning resources.
- Create knowledge repositories, visual references, job aids, and standardized resources.
- Resolve inconsistencies/ambiguity/missing info with SMEs.

Human Performance, Usability & Visual Communication
- Improve usability by reducing complexity and clarifying critical steps.
- Develop visual work instructions and other visual supports (e.g., maps, flowcharts, annotations, job aids, photos).
- Assess documentation practicality and effectiveness for intended users.

CAPA, Root Cause & Continuous Improvement Support
- Participate in meetings to understand priorities and rationale for procedural changes.
- Align documentation updates with root cause and corrective/preventive actions.
- Use knowledge of deviations/investigations/risk assessments/process performance indicators.
- Identify document-related barriers contributing to errors or rework.

Digital Learning & Content Enablement
- Support digital job aids, micro-learning, LMS-supporting content, and electronic performance support.
- Use approved technology and AI-assisted tools to improve drafting/review and consistency.
- Gather feedback and improve documentation effectiveness.

Experience Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Technical Writing, Communications, Education, Instructional Design, Engineering, Manufacturing, Science, or related field (preferred).
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in technical writing, manufacturing operations, training, quality systems, or regulated documentation.
- Experience in FDA-regulated cGMP/pharmaceutical/nutrition/medical device/food manufacturing (preferred).
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office; ability to learn document management systems and LMS/digital tools.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, collaborate cross-functionally, gather SME input, and communicate needs.

Preferred Competencies
- Adult learning principles, task analysis, performance-based training/knowledge transfer.
- SME interview experience and standardizing documentation across teams/sites.
- Quality/process improvement knowledge (CAPA, root cause, risk assessment, process mapping).
- Ability to develop visual and digital learning materials, and strong change management.
- Experience using AI/content automation for document creation and standardization.
