Role Summary
Supervisor, Animal Technicians responsible for supervising and performing all duties essential to proper care of animals at the designated pathogen-free (DPF) facility. Oversees and mentors a team of animal technicians, ensures daily animal care per SOPs, maintains detailed records, and manages cleanliness and disinfection of the DPF.
Responsibilities
- Supervise, mentor, coach, train and develop a team of animal technicians; ensure tasks are performed per SOPs; set goals and development plans; manage performance evaluations and support recruitment as needed.
- Support and perform daily DPF activities including feeding, washing, care of pigs, movement of pigs, and reproduction tasks (e.g., boar semen collection).
- Clean, disinfect, and maintain the DPF, including lawn mowing and trimming.
- Analyze data and processes; troubleshoot animal care issues; identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
- Assist Vet Techs with set-up, care during/after operations, sample collection, storage, shipment, and inventory.
- Provide training on animal husbandry procedures; author and revise SOPs and GMP documents; serve as SME for animal technician procedures; adhere to SOPs and QA standards.
- Interact with internal Quality and regulatory agencies during inspections.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Education and Experience:
- Associate degree in animal science or related field and 7+ years of large animal care/handling experience, or
- Bachelorโs degree in animal science or related field and 5+ years of large animal care/handling experience.
- Working knowledge of animal husbandry (nutrition, reproduction, safety).
- Ability to supervise, mentor, and develop a team of animal technicians.
- Strong operational planning and follow-through abilities.
- Working knowledge of data collection/recording.
- Knowledge of Animal Welfare and federal regulations (USDA, FDA, DEA) related to animal research.
- Must not have any other interaction with pigs outside of the company.
- Physical Demands:
- Lift 75 lbs to waist level
- Push/Pull 200 lbs on wheels
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelorโs degree in animal sciences or related field.
- 5+ years of experience in swine production.
- 5+ years of experience performing medical tests, observing behaviors, collecting samples, and administering medication to large animals.
- 5+ years of experience in facility and equipment maintenance.
- Registered Laboratory Animal Technologist Certification.
- Working knowledge of facility maintenance (mechanical, electrical, plumbing).

Additional Requirements
- Travel: Up to 25% in the first year; minimal travel thereafter.
