Role Summary

Summer 2026 - Graduate/PhD Mechanistic Modeling Internship. The Intern will work in the BMS Clinical Pharmacology & Pharmacometrics (CP&P) Department with a focus on mechanistic modeling projects, under the guidance of an experienced scientist. Potential projects include methods for efficient characterization and prediction of pharmacokinetics, drug-drug interactions, and pathway modeling related to discovery, toxicology, and clinical efforts. The internship provides exposure to pharmacometrics analysis, PK/exposure–response modeling, MBMA, and data analysis to advance R&D programs. The full-time internship runs June–August 2026 at multiple locations (Lawrenceville, NJ; Cambridge, MA; Brisbane, CA).

Responsibilities

  • Work with an experienced employee on a project related to population pharmacokinetic modeling, exposure–response modeling, pharmacokinetic–pharmacodynamic modeling, and machine learning initiatives in pharmacometrics.
  • Develop and parametrize mechanistic models using systems of ordinary differential equations.
  • Present analysis results, typically as a scientific poster and at team meetings.
  • Calibrate parametrized mini-models using in-house or public-domain data; identify sensitive parameters and their physiological ranges.
  • Incorporate pathway knowledge into platforms and test functionality with respect to existing therapies.
  • Assist in the analysis of discovery, toxicology, and clinical data.

Tasks may include

  • Prepare analysis datasets for pharmacometrics analyses of PK, biomarker, efficacy, and safety data.
  • Perform exploratory data analysis of PK, biomarker, efficacy, and safety data.
  • Develop pharmacometrics models to describe clinical observations of drug concentrations and biomarker/efficacy/safety responses.
  • Characterize the relationship between drug exposure and responses.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and subject matter experts as needed.
  • Participate in the BMS Intern Program activities.

Qualifications

  • Enrollment in a graduate program (Ph.D., M.S., PharmD) or undergraduate program (when applicable) in Pharmaceutical Sciences/Pharmacy, Engineering, Bioinformatics, Biomedical Sciences, Data Sciences, Mathematics or Statistics. Graduation date must be later than August 2026.
  • Familiarity with quantitative methods; hands-on experience or coursework with modeling tools such as NONMEM, Monolix, Phoenix/NLME, R, SAS, Python, Simcyp, GastroPlus, or MATLAB/SimBiology.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills and problem-solving ability.
  • Authorized to work in the US for the duration of the internship; no immigration/visa sponsorship available.

Education

  • No specific degree required beyond above; expected focus on pharmacometrics, modeling, data analysis, or related fields as described in Qualifications.
