Role Summary

The Sr Medical Scientist - Tampa, FL is part of the US Medical Affairs team in HIV (Treatment and Prevention). This field-based role supports the USMA Plans of Action and objective-based outcomes for HIV Treatment and HIV Prevention, developing professional relationships with healthcare decision-makers in public health, academic institutions, and community healthcare providers within the assigned geography. The position requires extensive field travel and collaboration across cross-functional teams.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver timely, accurate, and succinct clinical, scientific, and educational presentations to healthcare providers in HIV Treatment and Prevention, both proactively and in response to requests for information, consistent with PhRMA guidelines and FDA regulatory requirements
  • Implement defined goals and objectives aligned with the Medical Affairs Plan of Action and other strategic initiatives
  • Develop strategic plans for cultivating and maintaining working relationships with existing and future thought leaders in the assigned region
  • Provide timely insights to the strategy and competitive intelligence teams regarding treatment practice and trends observed in field interactions
  • Participate in advisory boards and educational programs, including speaker training sessions and clinical conferences
  • Collaborate with colleagues across other functional areas, including Global Medical Affairs, Clinical Development, Clinical Operations, Strategic Operations, Government and Public Affairs, Commercial, and Marketing
  • Utilize scientific field tools resources to deliver impactful presentations in a variety of settings
  • Complete required administrative and training procedures in a timely fashion
  • Adhere to all applicable pharmaceutical codes, OIG guidelines, and Gilead policies
  • Respond to clinical inquiries regarding marketed or developmental Gilead products
  • Develop and present complex scientific and clinical data for these products
  • Identify and develop regional and national opinion leaders to support Gilead products and train approved speakers through personal contacts and on-site visits
  • Establish strong relationships with opinion leaders, clinical investigators, and providers at academic and non-academic settings
  • Provide training to the sales force at national and regional levels
  • Work on the Gilead Phase IV program with collaboration from investigators and internal personnel
  • Select sites for Phase IV and other clinical trials
  • Anticipate and resolve field obstacles through collaboration
  • Travel to appointments, meetings, and conferences on a frequent and regular basis, sometimes with short notice
  • Demonstrate excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Maintain cognizance of relevant complex scientific data and regulatory requirements for field-based personnel
  • Commit to continuing education to maintain knowledge base

Qualifications

  • Basic Qualifications: 10+ years with BS/BA or 8+ years with MS/MA or MBA
  • Preferred Qualifications: Advanced medical/scientific/clinical degree (MD, DO, PhD, PharmD, NP/PA preferred) with pharma/healthcare experience; minimum 3 years in a medically related profession (e.g., HIV treatment/prevention) with knowledge of clinical research processes, treatment landscape, and professional guidelines
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver high-quality presentations to large groups
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills
  • Strong collaboration and networking abilities with medical thought-leaders, academic institutions, large practices, medical directors, and pharmacy directors
  • Excellent project management and organizational skills with multiple priorities
  • Strong business acumen; ability to translate scientific expertise to business goals
  • Ability to work with high autonomy and travel 75% of the time, including overnights and some weekends
  • Valid driver’s license for traveling by car
