Main Purpose and Objectives of Position
The Senior Director HSE is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining HSE programs and systems at the Lilly manufacturing site, overseeing manufacturing, labs, utilities, waste, emergency response, and administrative areas to ensure compliance with global and regulatory standards.
Leads the site HSE team, supports employee development, and serves as the primary liaison with corporate HSE to ensure readiness for regulatory inspections.
Key Responsibilities For This Role Include
Pre-Startup and Startup Phase:
- Lead operational readiness and startup collaboratively and inclusively.
- Build an HSE organization (capability, capacity, culture) for safe, compliant, efficient operations.
- Define HSE priorities/roadmap; implement systems and processes using internal expertise and external best practices.
- Establish and lead the site HSE Lead Team, embedding safety and environmental focus throughout project delivery and startup.
- Guide design, startup planning, and contractor safety with Global Facilities Delivery.
- Develop and scale HSE capabilities for full GMP manufacturing, including environmental and PSM capabilities.
- Partner with corporate/global teams to lead site-level strategic execution.
Post Startup:
- Own the HSE Management System to ensure compliance with regulations and Lilly Global standards.
- Define/manage HSE priorities, roadmap, business initiatives, metrics, and the HSE Plan with functional partners.
- Ensure reporting and recordkeeping compliance, including Title V.
- Benchmark best practices across the Lilly network and external industry.
- Develop future HSE leadership for site and global roles.
- Escalate critical HSE issues to site and corporate leadership as needed.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline.
- 5+ years leading HSE teams and programs (preferably with PSM and API manufacturing experience).
Additional Preferences:
- Proven HSE program/management system leadership in manufacturing, including PSM.
- Environmental compliance program experience, including Title V reporting and recordkeeping.
- Experience engaging regulatory agencies on EHS matters.
- Strong relationship-building across all levels, collaborating with Site Leadership.
- Track record developing high-performing teams and fostering a strong safety culture.
