Role Summary

The Senior EHS Specialist supports the implementation and ongoing improvement of environmental, health, and safety programs at the biopharmaceutical manufacturing facility. This role assists in maintaining regulatory and internal compliance, reducing risks across site operations, and ensuring a safe working environment for all employees. The position contributes to risk assessments, problem-solving efforts, and EHS program execution to drive proactive safety performance and continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Support the development, implementation, and maintenance of site EHS standards, procedures, and programs under the direction of the EHS Manager.
  • Assist in executing continuous improvement initiatives that align EHS activities with site operational goals and enhance overall safety performance and safety culture.
  • Support specialized regulatory program compliance, including select agent and toxins biosafety, industrial wastewater management, air emissions, hazardous waste, and other applicable regulations; maintain required documentation and participate in readiness activities.
  • Assist in managing EHS processes that identify, evaluate, and control hazards associated with production, laboratory, warehouse, facilities, and maintenance operations.
  • Conduct regular safety walk-throughs and 5S support activities on the shop floor, partnering with cross-functional teams to identify hazards, promote housekeeping standards, and reinforce safe behaviors.
  • Understanding of local and global EHS regulations and practices. May represent AbbVie externally on matters related to EHS with external regulatory agencies and organizations.
  • Maintain and update reporting databases and generate monthly and quarterly EHS performance reports to area management. Includes leading monthly safety meetings and positive interventions.
  • Manage incident responses and conduct incident investigations, gather facts, support root-cause analysis, and track corrective and preventive actions through closure.
  • Develop and deliver EHS training materials and toolbox talks, ensuring content meets learner and business needs and reinforces site safety expectations.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree (EHS related, Engineering, chemistry) plus 5+ years of EHS related experience or Master’s Degree (EHS related, Engineering, chemistry) plus 3 years of EHS related experience. EHS or Engineering professional certification is preferred, but not required.
  • Working experience in implementing EHS regulations, conducting incident investigations, and managing cross functional teams.
  • Ability to establish measurable project goals and implementation plans, balance conflicting work demands, and develop action plans.
  • Ability to develop standards and/or policies that meet business objectives.
  • Ability to actively listen, build, and maintain effective working relationships with internal/external colleagues and stakeholders, and resolve conflict constructively.
  • Ability to successfully manage project and programs.

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree (EHS related, Engineering, chemistry) or Master’s Degree (EHS related, Engineering, chemistry) as specified in Qualifications.
