Senior Specialist, Laboratory Automation / Controls Engineer (Rahway, NJ)
How You’ll Make An Impact
- Build the digital backbone of automated laboratories by developing SCADA-based (e.g., Ignition) solutions that connect equipment, workflows, and data.
- Translate scientific workflows into scalable systems by partnering with researchers and automation engineers.
- Develop across the operations technology platform stack (back-end architecture with IT, equipment modules, user interfaces, orchestration logic).
- Solve complex integration challenges across software, automation, and laboratory workflows.
- Integrate instruments, automation platforms, and data systems to enable end-to-end digital workflows.
- Improve platform performance, reliability, usability, and maintainability.
- Train and upskill colleagues on laboratory SCADA and orchestration development best practices.
- Create clear documentation and reusable design patterns to support scalability.
Education Minimum Requirement
- B.S. in Engineering (Mechanical/Electrical/Chemical), Computer Science, Robotics, Mechatronics, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or related field; at least 6 years relevant experience.
Required Experience and Skills
- SCADA/orchestration software experience (DeltaV, Ignition, WinCC OA, etc.).
- Automation experience supporting process development or production.
- Scripting/programming following best practices (version control, design patterns, clean code).
- Independent, entrepreneurial work on cross-functional teams.
- Scientific collaboration and communication with end-users, technicians, and vendors.
Preferred Experience and Skills
- Python, C#, VBA, JavaScript, or R.
- Automation experience in pharmaceuticals/biopharma/vaccines.
- PLC/microcontroller and edge-controller experience.
- Data science/AI-ML understanding; (bio)pharmaceutical R&D/analytical development knowledge.
- Manufacturing equipment/process control, tuning, networking, data analysis; IT networking/system architecture.
Required Skills: Biopharmaceutical industry; SCADA; lab automation; instrumentation/robotic automation; systems architecture; DeltaV and Ignition systems.
Preferred Skills: ML; Product/R&D; Siemens PLC.
