Senior Scientist Automation and Advanced Modeling (Cambridge, MA)
Main Responsibilities
- Work with lab teams (process chemists, engineers, high-throughput experimentation) to design, develop, and deploy automated systems, robotics, instrumentation, and digital workflows that improve lab productivity and efficiency.
- Program and develop automated laboratory systems, including software development/deployment, integrating analytical instruments with laboratory software, and enabling seamless instrument-to-data management communication.
- Build mechanistic, hybrid, and data-driven modeling solutions for small molecule process development; collaborate to integrate crystallization modeling into process design and optimization workflows.
- Assist with development and deployment of digital twins for batch and continuous processes aligned with Quality by Design (QbD); implement and scale Model Predictive Control (MPC) systems to optimize real-time performance, maintain product quality, and improve operational efficiency.
- Present technical work to project/cross-functional teams and management; document work and continuous improvements in eLNB and summarize in technical reports.
- Lead/extend external collaborations (academic/industrial/government) and steer collaboration projects to address scientific knowledge gaps.
Qualifications
- PhD in chemical engineering, mathematics, or physics, or a Master’s degree in chemical engineering/mathematics/physics with 4+ years’ experience, or a Bachelor’s degree with 8+ years’ experience.
Required Skills
- Strong ability to write and optimize scripts in Python/Matlab/C#/Visual Basic.
- Experience designing and implementing automated lab processes from concept through full deployment.
- Ability to translate mathematical models into computer programs.
Preferred Qualifications
- Crystallization modeling and simulation tools (e.g., gPROMS).
- Familiarity with lab analytical measurement instruments; relevant pharmaceutical sciences lab experience.
- Domain knowledge in small molecule process development (industrial applications and/or academic publications).
- Knowledge of multivariate analysis, chemometrics, and statistics.
- Experience developing and scaling continuous processes.
