Role Summary

The Senior Director, Cardiology serves as the U.S. medical and scientific subject matter expert (SME) for ATTR amyloidosis and related cardiology disease states. This highly visible role blends scientific expertise, external leadership, and strategic influence across the cardiology landscape.

Approximately 60% of the role is externally facing, engaging Tier 1 cardiologists, centers of excellence, and key professional societies to elevate scientific exchange and partnership. The remaining 40% focuses on internal collaborationโ€”providing SME input into KOL strategy, evidence generation, medical education, and patient advocacy initiatives, as well as serving as a senior trainer and strategic advisor for field medical teams.

Responsibilities

  • External Leadership & Scientific Engagement (โ‰ˆ 60%)
    • Serve as the lead U.S. cardiology expert within Medical Affairs, representing Alnylam across Tier 1 KOLs, amyloidosis centers, and national cardiology societies (AHA, ACC, HFSA).
    • Lead executive-level scientific discussions to advance disease awareness, diagnostics, and treatment optimization.
    • Build and sustain deep, trust-based relationships with key external experts to inform strategy and identify collaboration opportunities.
    • Represent Alnylam Medical Affairs at major scientific meetings, symposia, and advisory boards.
    • Partner with field medical leadership to shape KOL mapping, segmentation, and engagement strategy, ensuring alignment and execution excellence.
    • Generate actionable scientific and clinical insights from external engagements and ensure integration into broader U.S. Medical Affairs insight and strategy processes.
  • Internal Strategy, Evidence & Field Enablement (โ‰ˆ 40%)
    • Act as the cardiology SME contributing to U.S. medical strategy, evidence generation priorities, and the broader scientific platform for ATTR.
    • Provide SME input into cross-functional initiatives, collaborating closely with Clinical Development, HEOR, Payer Medical, and Patient Advocacy.
    • Support evidence generation and ISR strategies, including protocol input, data interpretation, and scientific dissemination.
    • Deliver advanced cardiology and amyloidosis training for field medical teams to elevate scientific capabilities and ensure consistency in engagement.
    • Ensure alignment of insights, field strategy, and scientific priorities across the Medical Affairs organization.
    • Uphold the highest standards of scientific integrity, compliance, and ethical governance across all medical activities.

Qualifications

  • MD or DO, Board-Certified Cardiologist required (Advanced Heart Failure or Amyloidosis specialization strongly preferred).
  • 8โ€“10+ years of combined clinical and medical affairs experience, with โ‰ฅ3 years in an industry medical or strategy role.
  • Deep understanding of the U.S. cardiology and rare disease landscape.
  • Demonstrated success in engaging Tier 1 KOLs and external thought leaders at the national level.
  • Strong cross-functional collaboration skills and ability to influence without authority.
  • Exceptional communication, executive presence, and data storytelling skills.
  • Ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, high-accountability environment.
