Role Summary

Senior Manager, Mechanical Engineering – lead and architect the mechanical design of analytical instruments from concepts to final products. Report into the hardware development team and empower a team of engineers to deliver high-quality designs from concept to production.

Responsibilities

  • Be responsible for all mechanical design deliverables.
  • Lead a team of staff-level mechanical engineers (25+ years of experience).
  • Ensure designs meet requirements for performance, reliability, and manufacturability.
  • Manage project timelines and resources to meet project goals as it relates to the mechanical team.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to the mechanical engineering team.
  • Define and establish best practices and processes for the mechanical engineering team, driving continuous improvement.
  • Foster a collaborative and innovative team environment.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant industry standards and regulations.
  • Oversee the creation and maintenance of engineering documentation, PDM vault, mechanical drawings, and BOMs.
  • Contribute to design reviews and system-level problem-solving efforts.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration of mechanical designs.
  • Use system-level thinking to design new products and apply strong technical problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrate expertise in precision mechanical design and lead design of opto-mechanical instruments with automation, optics/detection, and fluidics.
  • Iterate and experiment with ideas to move concepts forward promptly.
  • Optimize design for manufacturability and participate in transfer to manufacturing; understand manufacturing technologies for cost-effective designs.
  • Collaborate across disciplines to develop practical designs and test plans.
  • Proactively seek and incorporate feedback with good intent.
  • Hire and grow the team as needed.
  • Bonus: experience in the life sciences instrumentation industry.
  • Bonus: experience in capillary and/or microfluidic-based consumable design.

Qualifications

  • A degree in engineering, physics, or related disciplines is required.
  • 20+ years of intensive work experience in mechanical and system design.
  • Strong SolidWorks background, familiar with PDM and PLM systems; expert with SolidWorks and PDM.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.
  • Experience with designing complex analytical instruments/systems and consumables.
  • Microfluidic design knowledge is desired.

Education

  • A degree in engineering, physics, or related disciplines is required.
