Role Summary

Senior Manager, Environmental Health and Safety. Responsible for developing, planning, coordinating, and directing environment, health and safety activities at Bio-Techne and its sites, while ensuring compliance and providing guidance to the company’s California sites. Focuses on achieving high EHS performance through behavior-based initiatives, auditing, mentoring, and rapid change implementation.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary liaison for EHS activities in California (San Jose, Newark, San Marcos remote).
  • Develop, implement, and maintain EHS policies, procedures, and training programs to meet federal (OSHA, EPA) and California (Cal/OSHA, CalEPA, DTSC, SCAQMD/Bay Area AQMD) regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure California site compliance with Cal/OSHA Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP) and related standards, Emergency Action and Fire Prevention Plans, HazCom/GHS labeling, Ergonomic standards, and other applicable regulations.
  • Oversee hazardous materials management, including compliance with California Hazardous Waste Control Law, submission of HMBP to local CUPAs, and management of Tiered Permitting or RCRA waste as required.
  • Coordinate environmental compliance activities for California sites including SWPPP, air permit compliance, and spill reporting requirements.
  • Oversee recordkeeping including OSHA 300A/301 logs and California Log 300 posting.
  • Participate in incident investigations and root cause analyses, ensuring corrective actions are completed and verified.
  • Conduct internal audits and compliance activities at all sites.
  • Lead EHS-related training programs, including Bloodborne Pathogens, Chemical Hygiene, Hazard Communication, and California-specific required trainings.
  • Provide mentoring, coaching, and cultural leadership to enhance safety culture across all supported sites.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • B.A./B.S. degree and 5+ years of EHS / Hazardous materials experience, or equivalent combination of education, experience, and training.
  • Preference for Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or other safety management certification.
  • Preference for experience with FDA Good Manufacturing Practices and large facilities EHS operations.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Working knowledge of OSHA, EPA, ISO14001, ISO9001/ISO13485 and related regulatory requirements.
  • Knowledge of biosafety, ergonomics, materials management, and related programs.
  • Ability to influence key business decisions involving operational EHS functions.
  • Demonstrated leadership to improve safety culture; strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills; proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Problem solving, troubleshooting, critical thinking; ability to work independently and in a team; detail-oriented and accurate.

Education

  • B.A./B.S. degree required.

Additional Requirements

  • On-site presence required; occasional travel; potential extended hours including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds; ability to walk facilities, conduct inspections, and respond to emergencies.
