Role Summary

Senior Manager, Business Operations — The role serves as a strategic and tactical partner to the Development Sciences function within AbbVie's Research and Development organization, primarily responsible for managing the operational and financial aspects of the Preclinical Safety department. The position collaborates with functional leadership to plan projects and execute activities aligned with departmental strategies, goals, and objectives. The successful candidate will implement process improvements and influence strategic decision-making across assigned business areas.

Responsibilities

  • Lead operational activities to enhance functional capabilities, efficiencies, and culture, including resource and capability planning, contracts management, demand/capacity modeling, facilitation of team meetings, and general support of departmental goals.
  • Forecast, construct, and manage budgets in collaboration with function leadership; forecast and manage implications of alternative development scenarios.
  • Provide leadership and develop strategic recommendations to ensure all functional areas operate within the current Plan/Update budget.
  • Serve as local finance resource.
  • Support the advancement of broader Development Sciences Strategic objectives in collaboration with Business Operations leadership and peers; contribute to building group capabilities through process improvements and issue/opportunity identification.
  • May oversee operations activities/projects managed by others within the function(s).

Qualifications

  • MS/BS degree in a scientific or business field with at least 7 years in a scientific or business function within the pharmaceutical industry. Ph.D. may substitute for 2 years of industry experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of standard business processes and systems including project management practices, portfolio review, finance, and budgeting (strongly preferred).
  • Operations experience with a large budget and matrixed environment (preferred).
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and a track record for successful project management.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to engage internal researchers and senior management.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills; ability to manage multiple priorities/projects in a dynamic environment with competing deadlines.
  • Experience in conflict resolution and problem solving; proactive, positive team player; ability to build strong business relationships, foster teamwork, and influence decisions at multiple levels.
