Purpose
The Director, RWD Data Engineering leads the end-to-end engineering vision for Lilly’s real-world data (RWD) infrastructure, designing and executing scalable cloud-native pipelines and data products that enable HEOR, SDIA, Statisticians, Medical, and Clinical teams to generate evidence faster and more reproducibly.

Responsibilities
- Lead design/development/implementation of cloud-native data products and high-throughput pipelines to transform raw RWD into analysis-ready assets.
- Lead Analytic Data Products Strategy; own end-to-end RWD data product lifecycle (requirements→prototyping→deployment/optimization).
- Build/maintain ETL/ELT pipelines for multi-modal RWD (claims, complex EHR, linked healthcare datasets) at very large scale.
- Implement lakehouse-style architectures (e.g., medallion bronze/silver/gold) and produce versioned, partitioned, audit-ready assets.
- Develop reusable, version-controlled transformation logic using healthcare coding standards (ICD-10/ICD-9, NDC, RxNorm, SNOMED, CPT/HCPCS, LOINC).
- Optimize SQL and distributed processing (e.g., Spark) for performance.
- Translate requirements into reproducible extraction/transformation logic (cohort construction, temporal logic).
- Establish standard engineering practices (automation, data quality checks, integrity testing, monitoring/alerting, documentation).
- Lead CI/CD, code review, and testing standards; collaborate cross-functionally.
- Develop KPIs; create an inclusive culture around high-quality data.

Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree (CS, Engineering, Statistics, IT, Bioinformatics, or related technical field).
- 5+ years hands-on data engineering.
- 5+ years applied expertise across Python, SQL, and ETL/ELT pipelines plus cloud platforms/tools (e.g., AWS Glue/EMR, Snowflake, Databricks).
- 3+ years people management.

Preferred Skills
- Master’s degree; healthcare/life sciences RWD experience.
- Spark/distributed computing (Spark, Dask), advanced SQL optimization (Redshift, Databricks/S3).
- Deep RWD standards/vendors knowledge (e.g., ICD, NDC, RxNorm, SNOMED, CPT, LOINC; Truveta/Optum/IQVIA/Komodo/HealthVerity).
- DevOps/CI-CD; observability/quality tooling (dbt, Great Expectations, etc.).
- OMOP CDM transformation; vocabulary management (Athena); OHDSI/PCORnet/Sentinel.
- Familiarity with AI/NLP for clinical notes and MLOps (MLflow/SageMaker/Azure ML).

Benefits (explicit)
- Eligible for company bonus; comprehensive benefits including 401(k), pension, vacation, medical/dental/vision/prescription, flexible benefits, life insurance, time off/leave, and well-being benefits.
