Responsibilities:
- Align legal strategy with portfolio objectives and support collaborative decision-making across the product lifecycle.
- Advise on and track U.S.-China legal/regulatory/policy frameworks for pharmaceutical collaborations involving China (HGR regulations, U.S. BIOSECURE Act, DOJ Bulk Data Transfer rules, proposed outbound biotech investment restrictions, U.S./China foreign investment frameworks), translating updates into actionable guidance.
- Develop/support training and guidance on the above frameworks.
- Advise on alliance/collaboration matters with China-based pharmaceutical/biotech partners, focusing on practical legal solutions for governance, execution, and long-term value.
- Interpret/analyze complex strategic agreements (licenses, collaborations, co-development, other alliances) and counsel business leadership on issues across partnered R&D, manufacturing, supply, and commercialization.
- Draft/review/negotiate amendments and governance/dispute/operational documents supporting the post-execution lifecycle.
- Partner with Transactions Legal and Business Development to evaluate, structure, and negotiate new collaborations (structuring, diligence, risk assessment, drafting, integration planning).
Qualifications:
- J.D. and currently admitted to the bar in at least one U.S. state; must be licensed where you work.
- Am Law 100 firm or in-house at major pharma/life sciences.
- 5+ years relevant experience (9+ preferred): life sciences/pharma transaction drafting and negotiation; advising on global collaborations/alliance governance/contract interpretation/amendments/disputes/partner management and/or pharma R&D, regulatory, manufacturing, supply, commercialization.
- Strong preference: China-based collaboration experience or global alliance management.
- Required: substantive knowledge of U.S.-China regulatory frameworks affecting China-involving pharmaceutical collaborations.
- Preferred: Mandarin proficiency; scientific background; understanding early/late-stage development concepts; autonomous, cross-functional collaboration; strong legal analysis and communication.
Work location:
- In-office at least three days/week at Abbott Park (North Chicago, IL) or AbbVie offices (Waltham, MA or South San Francisco, CA).
