Role Summary
Principal Project Engineer, Capital Projects (Onsite) at AbbVie Bioresearch Center in Worcester, MA, responsible for management and execution of capital projects involving construction/renovation of biopharmaceutical manufacturing space, R&D laboratories, and office space.
Responsibilities
- Act as Subject Matter Expert for the Project Engineering Group in renovation, new construction and installation of facility related equipment.
- Provide overall management of capital projects through the entire project life-cycle including scope management, scheduling, budgeting and coordinating activities interdepartmentally and with contractors.
- Develop scopes, specifications, estimates and standards for facility related projects.
- Participate in conceptual and detailed design efforts by identifying scope, gathering user requirements, and commenting on design packages.
- Oversee the implementation schedule for assigned capital projects to ensure on-time completion and turnover to internal customers.
- Deliver periodic project status reports to internal project stakeholders according to site policies.
- Manage procurement process and generate purchase requisitions for project equipment and labor purchases.
- Oversee mechanical design of vendor-fabricated equipment, review vendor submittals, and prepare/execute FAT/SAT protocols.
- Review project submittals and RFIs to ensure alignment with corporate specifications and industry best practices.
- Interact with city inspectors and outside contractors.
- Oversee on-site contractors, including scheduling, safety permits, on-site safety, and approval of equipment installation.
- Participate in regular contractor safety evaluations and ensure safety requirements are followed.
- Support startup of new equipment, including commissioning, field troubleshooting, and site validation support.
Qualifications
- Bachelors Degree in Engineering, science, or related discipline; 8+ years engineering experience preferred.
- Background in construction management for biopharmaceutical facilities and R&D labs; strong knowledge of interior/exterior construction and trades.
- Knowledge of building, architectural, plumbing, mechanical, electrical and fire protection codes.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks with excellent planning and organizational skills.
- Construction management training a plus; PMP certification advantageous.
- Good oral/written communication skills; ability to manage multiple projects and build constructive interdisciplinary relationships.

- Candidates must be able to lift 25 lbs and negotiate pipe racks/ladders.
