Patient Access Liaison (PAL) – Patient Access and Reimbursement specialist (field-based)
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as a resource on patient access and reimbursement for infused and specialty therapies.
- Assist patients, caregivers, and healthcare providers with insurance benefits, prior authorization, and reimbursement processes.
- Identify and resolve access challenges (coverage questions, prior authorization barriers, denied claims).
- Provide education on coding and billing considerations.
- Develop relationships with patients and caregivers via phone, virtual, and in-person engagement.
- Secure written/electronic patient HIPAA authorization within assigned geography.
- Assess patient needs and provide education/resources supporting therapy access.
- Educate patients on coverage and steps to obtain prior authorization.
- Provide information on co-pay assistance, national foundations, and free drug programs (as appropriate).
- Educate physician offices and sites of care on coverage pathways, reimbursement processes, and common prior authorization requirements.
- Support providers and infusion centers with reimbursement questions for patient cases.
- Investigate access challenges before and after infusion; support review of denied claims and next steps.
- Escalate complex/systemic reimbursement issues to internal stakeholders.
- Partner with internal teams (Market Access, Medical Affairs, Advocacy, Case Management, Site of Care) and share payer policy/reimbursement insights.
Compliance/Operational
- Adhere to policies, compliance guidance, and applicable regulations; ensure HIPAA alignment.
- Report adverse events/product complaints via pharmacovigilance processes.
- Maintain accurate documentation in internal systems.
What We Expect (Qualifications)
Basic Qualifications (Level 5): Doctorate; or Master’s + 2 years; or Bachelor’s + 4 years; or Associate’s + 8 years; or High school/GED + 10 years patient services and/or access/reimbursement.
Basic Qualifications (Level 6): Doctorate + 2 years; or Master’s + 4 years; or Bachelor’s + 6 years (patient services/access/reimbursement).
Preferred Qualifications
- Buy-and-bill or infused therapy experience; rare disease/orphan drug experience.
- Clinical background (nursing/allied health).
- Understanding of reimbursement (prior authorization, appeals, denied claims); HIPAA and FDA regulatory knowledge; familiarity with internal/OIG compliance.
- Strong analytical/problem-solving; excellent written/verbal communication; manage complex cases; cross-functional field team experience.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, CRM, AI, and relevant systems.
- Access/reimbursement, prior authorization, healthcare reimbursement systems, coding/billing awareness.
- Patient support program knowledge; learning agility; decision quality; stakeholder engagement.
- Respond rapidly to urgent access needs; operate in matrix environments; travel up to 50% (occasional overnights/weekends).
