Role Summary
The Pathologist Assistant I assists the assigned Pathologists in organizing and performing many aspects of the pathology portion of a study. This includes performing pathology report review, macrodissecting/microdissecting tumor areas, and may include marking of H&E and ordering appropriate tests based on tumor site, or microscopic evaluation of CISH. Also responsible for performing other quality pathology tasks as assigned.
Responsibilities
- Assists the Supervisor – Pathology Operations in the day-to-day operation of the Pathology/microdissection department.
- Reads Pathology Reports to determine the primary site of the specimen.
- Identifies areas of tumor (and normal tissue when needed) on a stained NFR slide and collects marked areas for molecular analysis using Micro and Macro techniques.
- Assesses tumor content of tissue (and normal tissue when needed) and orders appropriate testing.
- Maintains a clean workstation.
- Identifies missing/wrong information and opens discrepancies as necessary.
- Assesses CISH stains for gene amplification.
- Asks a Pathologist for help when questions arise about a case.
- Organizes slides, data, generates tables, and assists with related requests.
- Prioritizes and triages specimens, handles and disposes of specimens and chemical waste per procedures, and ensures regulatory compliance.
- Maintains confidentiality of sensitive information.
- Performs Quality Control and Quality Assurance tests as required; maintains documentation and logs.
- Reports concerns of test quality or safety to a Supervisor or Safety Officer.
- Maintains working knowledge of Laboratory Information Systems.
- Performs other related duties and special projects as required.
- Maintains laboratory procedures and compliance; recommends changes as needed.
- Operates, troubleshoots, and maintains microdissection equipment; documents procedures.
- Communicates laboratory issues to supervisors/management; promotes a positive work environment.
- May assist in training peers and new hires.
Qualifications
- Required: Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology with one of the following: Certified Cytotechnologist (ASCP), Pathologist Assistant (ASCP or AAPA), Histotechnologist (ASCP), other applicable laboratory certification, or internal training; OR Certified as a Medical Doctor (foreign-trained acceptable); OR Bachelor of Science with specified coursework and completion of ABHES/CAAHEP-accredited clinical training or equivalent experience; 0–1 year of experience.
- Required: Knowledge of clinical testing protocols with high attention to detail.
- Required: Completion of clinical laboratory training program (ABHES/CAAHEP) or equivalent, or documented laboratory training in each specialty where high complexity testing is performed.
- Preferred: Master’s or PhD in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology; relevant qualifications in technical pathology; 3–5 years of experience.
Additional Requirements
- Physical demands include long periods of sitting/standing, repetitive motion, ability to lift up to 30 pounds, and use of microscopes; exposure to lab hazards and chemicals may occur; travel may be required periodically; some evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
