Position Summary
The Pathologist Assistant I assists assigned pathologists in pathology study work, including pathology report review, macrodissection/microdissection of tumor areas, and may mark H&E (tumor/normal) and order appropriate tests based on tumor site, or perform microscopic evaluation of CISH. Also performs other pathology quality tasks as assigned.
Job Responsibilities
- Assist Pathology Operations with day-to-day pathology/microdissection department operations.
- Read pathology reports to determine specimen primary site.
- Identify tumor (and normal tissue when needed) on stained NFR slides and collect marked areas for molecular analysis using micro/macro techniques.
- Assess tumor content (and normal tissue when needed) and order appropriate testing.
- Assess CISH stains for gene amplification (if applicable).
- Maintain a clean workstation; identify and open discrepancies.
- Request pathologist help for case questions.
- Organize slides/data; generate tables; support other requests.
- Prioritize/triage specimens; handle/dispose specimens and chemical waste per procedures and ensure regulatory compliance.
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Perform QC/QA tests; maintain documentation/logs.
- Report test-quality and safety concerns to a supervisor/safety officer.
- Use Laboratory Information Systems.
- Maintain laboratory procedures; recommend changes.
- Operate/troubleshoot/preventive maintain microdissection equipment.
- Communicate issues/non-conformities; support teamwork; may assist training.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in chemical/biological/clinical/medical lab science or medical technology with: ASCP Certified Cytotechnologist, Pathologist Assistant (ASCP/AAPA), Histotechnologist (ASCP), other applicable certification, or internal training; OR certified Medical Doctor (foreign trained acceptable); OR BS plus 60 semester hours (including specified science/chemistry/MLT coursework), ABHES/CAAHEP-approved clinical lab training or 3 months documented specialty training; high care/attention to clinical protocols; 0–1 years experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s or PhD; relevant pathology technical qualifications; 3–5 years experience.

- Job-specific safety/compliance training as assigned; minimum 12 hours annual continuing education.
