Position Summary
The Pathologist Assistant I assists assigned Pathologists with organizing and performing pathology portions of a study, including pathology report review, macrodissecting/microdissecting tumor areas, and (as assigned) marking H&E (tumor and/or normal tissue) and ordering appropriate tests based on tumor site or microscopic evaluation of CISH.
Job Responsibilities
- Assist Pathology/microdissection department day-to-day.
- Read pathology reports to determine specimen primary site.
- Identify tumor (and normal when needed) on stained NFR slides and collect marked areas for molecular analysis using micro/macro techniques.
- Assess tumor content and order appropriate testing (as applicable).
- Maintain a clean workstation; identify missing/wrong information and open discrepancies.
- Assess CISH stains for gene amplification (as applicable).
- Consult a Pathologist when questions arise.
- Organize slides/data; generate tables; assist with requests.
- Prioritize/triage specimens; handle/dispose of specimens and chemical waste per procedures; ensure regulatory compliance.
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Perform QC/QA tests; maintain documentation/logs.
- Report concerns about test quality or patient/employee safety.
- Work with Laboratory Information Systems.
- Maintain lab procedures; recommend procedure changes.
- Perform/document microdissection equipment operation, troubleshooting, and preventive maintenance.
- Communicate laboratory problems/non-conformities; support a positive team environment; may assist training.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in relevant lab science/technology with qualifying certification (ASCP Cytotechnologist/Pathologist Assistant/Histotechnologist) or internal training; OR Medical Doctor; OR qualifying bachelor’s + at least 60 semester hours with specified science/chemistry requirements + approved/accredited clinical lab training or documented 3 months training per specialty for high complexity testing.
- High degree of care; adherence to clinical testing protocols.
- Experience: 0–1 years.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s or PhD in relevant field.
- Relevant technical pathology qualifications.
- Experience: 3–5 years.
Training
- Job-specific safety/compliance training; annual continuing education minimum 12 hours.
Other
- Periodic travel; some evenings/weekends/holidays.
