Patent Counsel / Senior Patent Counsel (Legal) — hybrid (3 days/week); based in Philadelphia, PA or Somerset, NJ (travel between Bridgewater, NJ and R&D sites in Philadelphia/Somerset).
Role Overview: Individual contributor on Legend’s Intellectual Property team with large-molecule expertise (antibody and process development); cell/gene therapy experience is a plus. Reports to the Global Head of Intellectual Property.
Key Responsibilities:
- Drive strategic IP procurement and global portfolio management (drafting/prosecuting patents with outside counsel) and advise on BD, licensing, collaborations, acquisitions, and other transactions.
- Support IP due diligence; assess risks/opportunities; perform freedom-to-operate, infringement, validity, and risk-mitigation analyses.
- Manage global dockets (US/foreign filings and post-grant proceedings such as reexamination, reissue, post-grant review, oppositions, appeals).
- Identify strategic patent opportunities; partner with stakeholders across R&D and commercialization.
- Provide patent-law education/guidance to scientists and business stakeholders.
- Review/draft/negotiate IP provisions in commercial, research, development, manufacturing, collaboration, licensing, and corporate agreements.
- Support IP-related transactions, adverse proceedings, and litigation for assigned programs; collaborate on cross-functional IP initiatives.
Requirements (Minimum/Preferred):
- BS in biological sciences (immunology/cell biology/cancer biology/biochemistry, etc.); advanced degree preferred.
- Admission to practice before USPTO required; JD (U.S. law degree).
- 8+ years patent prosecution experience in life sciences (drafting/prosecuting in pharma/biotech corporate and/or law firm).
- Good standing admission to at least one U.S. state bar.
- Strong global portfolio/FTO and risk-mitigation experience; experience with BD/licensing/collaboration transactions preferred.
- Gene/cell therapy and RNA therapeutics preferred; adverse proceedings a plus.
Benefits & Pay (as stated): Base pay $168,372–$220,988; medical/dental/vision, 401(k) match, 8 weeks paid parental leave after 3 months, PTO; voluntary benefits available to permanent full-time employees.
