Role Overview
Patent Counsel/Senior Patent Counsel (Hybrid; 3 days/week). Based in Philadelphia, PA or Somerset, NJ. Reports to Global Head of Intellectual Property. Some travel between Bridgewater, NJ and R&D sites in Philadelphia, PA and Somerset, NJ.
Key Responsibilities
- Drive strategic IP procurement and manage global intellectual property: draft/prosecute patent portfolios with outside counsel; partner on business development, licensing, collaboration, acquisition, and other transactions.
- Support IP-focused due diligence; evaluate transaction risks/opportunities; advise on IP strategy; conduct freedom-to-operate, infringement, validity, and risk assessment/mitigation.
- Manage global docket prosecution (US/foreign applications) and post-grant proceedings (e.g., reexamination, reissue, post-grant review, foreign oppositions/appeals).
- Identify and pursue strategic IP opportunities using patent law expertise and competitive landscape knowledge.
- Advise stakeholders across research, development, and commercialization; influence business leaders as a trusted advisor.
- Educate scientists/business stakeholders on patent law; maintain knowledge of relevant USPTO and jurisdictional case law/rules.
- Review/draft/negotiates IP provisions in commercial, research, manufacturing, collaboration, licensing, and other agreements.
- Support transactions with IP diligence and structure/strategy advice; partner in adverse proceedings/litigation for assigned programs.
- Participate in cross-functional projects to improve IP portfolio quality; build external relationships with outside counsel and partners.
Requirements
- BS in biological sciences (immunology/cell biology/cancer biology/biochemistry, etc.); advanced degree preferred. USPTO admission required; U.S. law degree (J.D.).
- 8+ years life sciences patent attorney experience; majority in drafting/prosecution in pharma/biotech (corporate and/or law firm).
- Current good standing admission to at least one U.S. state bar.
- Build global biopharma IP portfolios; design/execute complex freedom-to-operate analyses across technologies/jurisdictions; develop and communicate risk mitigation strategies.
- Preferred: business development/licensing/collaboration transaction experience (IP diligence, risk assessment, agreement negotiation).
- Plus: adverse IP proceedings (including US litigation); gene/cell therapy and RNA therapeutics experience.
- Strong communication, detail orientation, computer skills (databases/spreadsheets; MS Office), organization, and ability to work independently and as a team; ability to handle confidential information.
