Role Summary
The Area Business Leader (ABL) directs a team of Territory Account Specialists to deliver tailored customer experiences and clinical dialogue that drive demand in an assigned geography. Through regular face-to-face in-field interactions, the ABL mentors cross-functional collaboration with Healthcare Providers, Key Accounts and Systems of Care to establish Novartis as a preferred customer partner and to advance the brand strategy and tactics. The role fosters a high-performance, accountable culture and supports the team in achieving strategic sales objectives.
Responsibilities
- Recruit, develop, retain, mentor, and lead a diverse team to deliver on strategic sales objectives, establish accountability, and supervise KPIs across performance levels.
- Model a shared vision, set clear expectations, promote accountability, enable others to act, and optimize processes by challenging the status quo.
- Mentor Territory Account Specialists to coordinate resources for effective account calls and ensure customer needs are met with vitality.
- Develop and implement a customer-centric business plan with customer engagement and cross-functional partners to optimize customer experience and product demand.
- Serve as a regional leadership team member contributing to regional goals, business execution, and culture.
- Embed a customer-centric culture where teams are engaged, voice concerns, collaborate, experiment, and continuously improve.
- Maintain in-depth knowledge of clinical, access and reimbursement, territory management, and omni-channel marketing tools to develop and mentor team members.
- Use analytics to inform decisions and identify risks and opportunities to optimize resource deployment across meetings, omni-channel resources, and cross-functional partners.
Qualifications
- Required: Bachelor’s degree from a 4-year college or university.
- Required: 2+ years’ experience as a first-line sales manager with strategic thinking and enterprise mindset in pharma/biotech or similarly structured industries with large, geographically dispersed sales teams.
- Required: 2+ years’ experience as a first-line sales manager with leadership in sophisticated selling environments; demonstrated success (awards, high rankings, strong performance).
- Required: Proven ability to attract, develop, and retain diverse talent and build high-performing teams; experience leading cross-functional teams in matrixed, multi-regional environments.
- Required: Experience managing field organizations through change, innovation, or growth.
- Required: Residence within the territory or within 100 miles of the territory border; ability to travel 60-80% across a broad geography; valid driver’s license.
- Preferred: Experience leading sales teams promoting to large practices, hospitals, IDNs & SoC customers with understanding of reimbursement for outpatient and inpatient settings.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree required from a 4-year college or university.

- Ability to travel 60-80% over a broad geography; relocation not offered; field-based role with remote work.
