Role Summary

The Medical Science Liaison is a field-based scientific expert who strategically supports the scientific and business objectives of a designated therapeutic area across the product life cycle for a specific geography/territory. The MSL is a primary communicator of AbbVie science within the territory to healthcare professionals, combining strategic vision with clinical expertise to serve as a conduit of information to a cross-functional internal and external audience. The MSL develops and maintains professional relationships to provide medical and scientific support to AbbVie initiatives, and facilitates the exchange of scientific information, education, and research activities for physicians and ancillary healthcare professionals.

Responsibilities

  • Focus on mastery of scientific content, materials, disease state, and therapeutic area to establish themselves as a scientific expert.
  • Identify, develop, and maintain professional relationships with thought leaders, academic centers, and researchers to ensure access to current medical and scientific information.
  • Present scientific information and education related to disease state, therapeutic landscape, and AbbVie products across the product lifecycle to healthcare professionals.
  • Support research initiatives and physician-initiated projects including site evaluation, recruitment, investigator meetings, external expert identification, and collaboration management.
  • Serve as an internal medical and scientific resource for disease-state and product communications that are medically accurate, balanced, and regulatory-compliant.
  • Collaborate with internal cross-functional teams and in-field commercial teams to develop and execute account plans that meet shared objectives.
  • Provide ongoing training to medical affairs, field sales, and other internal personnel; maintain up-to-date clinical knowledge and competitor data.
  • Apply core capabilities in strategic segmentation and optimal resource utilization.
  • Ensure compliance with corporate and divisional policies, including accurate documentation of HCP interactions and maintaining expenses within budget.

Qualifications

  • Required: Advanced degree (PharmD, MD/DO, PhD, APP) in a relevant scientific discipline; Doctorate strongly preferred in a health science or clinical discipline.
  • Required: Typically 0–2 years of relevant experience.
  • Preferred: Oncology/Solid Tumor experience.
  • Required: Problem-solving and analytical skills to translate territory and corporate needs into actionable objectives.
  • Required: Proficiency in Excel, Word, PowerPoint and other software; strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Required: Ability to quickly learn and apply skills in Scientific Storytelling, Identifying Mobilizers, and Active Listening.
  • Required: HCIR credentialing requirements to enter facilities within the assigned territory (may include background checks, drug screens, and immunization proof).
  • Required: Ability to convey clinical and non-clinical technical information effectively and engage audiences for understanding and retention.
  • Required: Willingness to travel up to 75% of the time.

Education

Additional Requirements

  • Travel up to 75% of the time within the territory.
  • Health care industry representative credentialing (HCIR) as required to enter facilities and organizations in the territory.
