Role Summary
The Skeletal Conditions Medical Science Liaison (MSL) / Senior MSL is a regional field-based role that supports BioMarin's scientific and business objectives by cultivating academic and clinical thought leaders locally, regionally, and nationally. MSLs are the primary scientific communicators of BioMarin science to healthcare providers and other key medical stakeholders, serving as peer experts in their therapeutic area. In this role you will identify clinical and post-marketing study investigators, provide actionable insights to internal teams, and support Investigator Research proposals; travel to cover Midwest to Western territories is required.
Responsibilities
- Execute SC medical MSL plan and tactics within assigned territory to meet scientific objectives and company-defined goals for products both marketed and in development
- Development and periodic refinement of an approved MSL Territory Plan designed to support and meet strategic medical objectives
- Provide education relative to disease state and BioMarin products across product lifecycle to health care providers among specialties including Genetics, Pediatric Endocrinology, Pediatric Orthopedics, and other relevant specialties
- Serve as a medical/scientific resource through answering unsolicited medical questions and addressing other related medical information queries
- Engage in scientific exchange and provide feedback on emerging clinical/competitive trends
- Identify, document, discuss and communicate insights to internal stakeholders
- Maintain clinical and technical expertise in relevant therapeutic area
- Partner with medical and research groups and compliantly collaborate with commercial team
- Provide support to BioMarin clinical trials including but not limited to: site identification and evaluation; recruitment; investigator meetings; external expert identification; and study management
- Support clinical operations in identifying and interacting with potential investigators for BioMarin products in development as per Medical Affairs therapeutic area plan
- Support the implementation and coordination of external investigator-initiated research
- Participate in local, regional, and national meetings/conferences in support of all scientific and medical objectives
- Review scientific journals, lead, and participate in internal journal clubs
- Serve as a scientific resource to commercial and marketing partners. Participate in sales team training, medical updates, scientific presentations, journal clubs, and other approved meetings as appropriate
- Have responsibility for assigned special projects and mentoring of other team members
- Self-development: Develops and communicates a professional growth plan. Take responsibility for and actively manage professional development. Continually educates self on market issues, trends, and product knowledge as it pertains to specific business responsibilities in key therapeutic areas
- Assure compliance with BioMarin operational guidelines
Qualifications
- MSL: BA/BS in life or health sciences; Advanced degree (MS, doctoral level) preferred
- MSL: 3 or more years of relevant experience in clinical and 1 or more year as an MSL preferred
- MSL: Experience in rare genetic diseases, ACH and/or Skeletal Conditions therapy preferred
- MSL: Experience in product launch, development, and execution preferred
- MSL: Knowledge of regulations impacting Medical Affairs and field activities in the pharmaceutical industry
- MSL: Excellent oral and written communication, organization, and people skills
- MSL: Proven record as a team player
- MSL: Project management understanding and experience
- MSL: Ability to effectively work in a virtual environment and knowledge of virtual and collaborative systems
- Sr. MSL: In addition to MSL criteria above, the Sr. MSL has advanced competence in communication, problem solving and adaptability, and foundational competence in leadership, strategic thinking and planning, and problem solving and decision making
- Sr. MSL: 5 or more years of relevant clinical experience, and 3 or more years of MSL/Medical Director experience preferred
- Sr. MSL: Project Leadership experience preferred
Additional Requirements
- Travel for field engagements and Specialty Congresses (50–70%)
