Role Summary
The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) is a field-facing role in Gastroenterology responsible for scientific exchange with external experts, stakeholder engagement, and insights generation to advance medical understanding of our products. The role requires working in a remote/field capacity across the Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, and Wisconsin region, and involves building peer relationships with key opinion leaders and providers while ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
Responsibilities
- Be the trusted scientific partner to external experts by conducting timely, appropriate, and frequent scientific exchanges to enhance the understanding of the scientific and medical value of our products.
- Execute stakeholder engagement plans to gather data, develop and share medical insights that contribute to enhancement of medical messages, plans, and future research.
- Stay current with medical and scientific developments to identify research opportunities and support evidence-generation plans in real-world settings.
- Recognize, record, and share insights to deepen understanding of patient, regulator, payer, and provider needs and identify unmet needs.
- Maintain effective communication among internal stakeholders (Medical Affairs, Medical Information, Commercial Operations) while complying with company, industry, legal, and regulatory requirements.
- Demonstrate operational understanding and risk management by ensuring excellence in governance processes.
- Engage external stakeholders in medical and scientific information exchanges, articulating the medical and scientific value of products and maintaining high scientific/clinical knowledge.
- Establish robust, long-term peer relationships with Key Opinion Leaders and other stakeholder partners.
- Engage with stakeholders on medical, clinical, epidemiologic, and scientific topics to advance understanding of the disease and respond to questions within regulatory guidelines.
- Understand local, state, regional, federal, or national healthcare policies and guidelines as they relate to clinical practices.
- Map and prioritize stakeholders, identifying opportunities to collaborate and build value-based partnerships supporting therapeutic goals.
- Plan territory and stakeholder engagement strategies aligned with the Medical Affairs plan and priorities.
- Represent Sanofi at scientific congresses and organize educational meetings or local scientific advisory boards when requested.
- Support speakers’ training to ensure continued scientific support in the field.
- Respond to unsolicited requests for medical information related to supported products and disease areas.
- Gather data and generate insights from stakeholder interactions and provide feedback to the organization.
- Record and report insights using approved mechanisms and tools; evaluate information from studies and interactions to develop key insights for medical strategy and product development.
- Maintain awareness of emerging evidence to inform discussions with stakeholders.
- Collaborate with internal teams (Commercial Operations, Regulatory, etc.) to facilitate reviews, product positioning, and compliance needs; contribute to creation of internal/external materials within policies.
- Support data collection opportunities and identify opportunities for additional data collection in clinical or investigator-led studies.
- Monitor disease epidemiology and assist with protocol development for various study types when needed; respond to unsolicited ISS inquiries and support ISS submissions.
- Operate independently in a regulatory-compliant manner from a remote environment; travel nationally and internationally as required.
- Manage a base of stakeholders and develop engagement plans to meet objectives; oversee KOL relationships and territory-specific medical strategy.
Qualifications
- Required: Advanced degree in a technical, scientific, or medical field (MD, PhD, PharmD) preferred; or other Life Science degree (RN/MS) with Gastroenterology expertise; must reside in the territory.
- Required: Valid driver’s license with clean driving record and ability to pass background check; capable of driving a company car for daily meetings.
- Required: Ability to operate vehicle safely and comply with company policies and traffic laws.
- Required: Minimum of 2 years of experience in pharmaceutical industry, Medical Science Liaison role, or relevant clinical practice; MSL experience strongly preferred. Immunology/Gastroenterology clinical experience is a plus.
- Required: Clear understanding of medical practice, clinical decision making, and healthcare systems; ability to interpret key scientific data and translate into educational/research needs.
- Required: Exemplary communication and presentation skills; experience working on multidisciplinary teams and managing multiple projects.
