Laboratory Automation Scientist

Role: Laboratory Automation Scientist supporting automation of biopharma laboratory workflows at Johnson & Johnson's Spring House site. Objectives: translate manual assays into automated methods, optimize and troubleshoot automated systems, and improve workflow reliability. Responsibilities: design and deploy automated protocols for protein discovery, NGS, biochemical, and cell-based assays; configure liquid handlers and integrated workcells; develop and refine run instructions, SOPs, and troubleshooting guides; support scientific request translation into automation; analyze and enhance system performance, troubleshoot issues, and collaborate on continuous improvement. Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, Engineering, or related field; 3+ years (or Master's with 2+ years, PhD with 1+ year) experience in laboratory automation, assay automation, or scientific workflows; practical experience with automated liquid handlers or similar systems; strong understanding of lab workflows, sample handling, data capture, and automation software. Preferred: experience with systems like Hamilton, Tecan, Beckman, or vendor scripting languages; background in high-throughput screening, NGS library prep, or cell-based assays; familiarity with automation platforms such as BioSero, Momentum, Python, SQL, ELN, LIMS. High-value: focus on biopharma assay automation, workflow optimization, and data quality in a regulated environment. Work setup: based in Spring House, PA, with potential travel for vendor assessments, system builds, or cross-site activities.
