Lab Technician 1 - Chemistry

Summary:
The Lab Technician 1 performs routine laboratory tests to support diagnosis and treatment of animal health conditions by preparing samples, operating laboratory equipment, and maintaining accurate records. Works with veterinarians/medical team and other lab personnel to ensure quality and accuracy in diagnostic services.

Job Duties:
- Prepare biological specimens for testing (hematology, urinalysis, serology, chemistry, endocrinology, parasitology, cytology, coagulation)
- Use automated analyzers, microscopes, and diagnostic equipment to test samples (whole blood, serum, urine, feces)
- Set up and execute tests, review results, and release findings per ZRL Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
- Perform routine/non-routine analyzer maintenance and basic troubleshooting on one major department analyzer
- Review and accept daily Quality Control reports and weekly Levey-Jennings charts
- Handle/store specimens per ZRL SOPs; maintain clean/organized lab workspace
- Handle/dispose of medical and biohazardous waste per regulatory guidelines
- Complete lab logs (maintenance, environmental, cleaning) and maintain records (medical records, courier logs/manifests)
- Prepare specimens for shipment to offsite facilities per DOT standards
- Receive/store/log lab and office supplies
- Operate/maintain secondary equipment (centrifuges, pipettes, heating blocks, slide stainers)
- Follow SOPs and training modules from Zoetis Reference Laboratories

Education/Experience:
- High School Diploma or equivalent required
- Associate or Bachelor’s degree preferred
- 1–2 years clinical laboratory experience performing basic lab testing/operations required
- Preferred proficiency: Hematology, Chemistry, Urinalysis, Endocrinology, Parasitology, Cytology

Technical Skills Required:
- Strong attention to detail; strong data entry
- Proficient with lab equipment and software; IT and LIS experience
- Team-oriented collaboration; ability to work independently
- Organizational/time management skills; strong written/oral communication
- Ability to complete tasks with minimal supervision; fluency in English

Physical Position Requirements:
- Lift up to 50 pounds; bend/kneel/stoop/crouch; walk/sit/stand for extended periods
