Position Summary
The Histology Technologist II assists pathology professionals with Immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining and high-complexity laboratory procedures, including specimen processing, embedding/re-embedding, slide preparation, microtomy, QC, grossing, and other related tasks. Also performs lower-complexity tasks such as cover-slipping, unloading instruments, making buffers, and changing reagents.
Job Responsibilities
- Perform routine histology tasks (embedding, cutting) and high-complexity work (QC, grossing, processing, loading/unloading slides) on Ventana and Dako Auto-stainer platforms.
- Identify lab problems, communicate with leadership, and support troubleshooting.
- Execute lab protocols/SOPs; complete job-specific training and routine competencies.
- Maintain diagnostic viability and correct labeling by verifying case IDs across blocks/slides; print slides/labels as needed.
- Document activities in laboratory logs and the LIS.
- Maintain equipment and report maintenance/repair needs.
- Identify issues affecting test performance/reporting; take appropriate action.
- Maintain performance consistency in all trained areas; learn special tasks (e.g., Digital Pathology Image QC, ACC Video Receipt/Trash QC, Lab Ops ACC1, PA Dissection).
- Assist with related duties and special projects as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Strong technical skills.
- 3+ years IHC/histology laboratory experience.
- HT/HTL (ASCP) certification.
High Complexity Requirements
- Bachelorβs (chemical/biological/clinical/medical lab science or medical technology) or Associate degree in lab science/medical lab technology (accredited).
- Or 60 semester hours (or equivalent) including either: 3 months documented IHC/histology high-complexity training; and/or completion of clinical lab training plus required science hours (including chemistry, biology, and/or medical lab technology) per program guidelines.
Preferred Qualifications
- QIHC strongly advised.
