Overview
The Executive Director, Assistant General Counsel, Intellectual Property (IP) will develop and implement global IP strategies and advise cross-functional teams on IP matters, supervising IP team members responsible for day-to-day IP management and protection (particularly in neuroscience).
Key Job Responsibilities
- Develop and execute IP strategies for neuroscience assets; directly/indirectly supervise neuroscience IP team members.
- Partner with stakeholders globally across research, drug development, and commercialization to provide strategic business-enabling IP advice.
- Strengthen the IP portfolio via project engagement and collaboration; apply patent law and competitive landscape insights.
- Build global IP portfolios from invention capture to patent issuance.
- Manage worldwide IP portfolios for in-licensed and internally developed IP (as assigned).
- Provide independent IP support for Corporate Development: IP due diligence, analyses, and input into transactional documents/negotiations.
- Conduct freedom-to-operate, infringement, validity analyses, risk evaluations, and mitigation strategies.
- Manage outside counsel for patent prosecution and legal opinions/risk assessments.
- Counsel internal clients and senior management on patentability, FTO, infringement, validity, and regulatory exclusivity.
- Educate stakeholders; review materials for clearance.
- Advise on adversarial proceedings (IP disputes, litigation, IPRs/PGRs, European/foreign oppositions).
- Lead department initiatives to improve IP practice and operations.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Fully qualified US or European Patent Attorney with 12+ years biopharma IP experience (in-house or combined in-house/law firm).
- Undergraduate degree in a relevant life science/chemistry/biological field; advanced degree preferred.
- Experience managing IP practitioners/staff.
- Significant experience with IP due diligence and licensing/collaboration agreements.
- Plus: experience in adversarial/administrative proceedings.
- Strong communication/presentation skills; strategic, independent, cross-functional collaboration; manage external counsel.
- Strong prioritization and ability to manage diverse workload.
- Plus: experience with botanical product/process protection.
