Role Summary

Environmental Health & Safety Engineer II at Novo Nordisk. Core member of the Environmental, Health & Safety team, providing direct support as liaison to multiple operations areas, guidance to EHS team members and site operations leadership, subject matter expertise on several EHS aspects, and oversight of health & safety programs.

Responsibilities

  • Communicate effectively to all levels of the organization, both orally & written
  • Support advancement of OSHA process safety management program & US EPA risk management plan (RMP) through improvement of written programs & training modules
  • Support EHS functions such as emergency response & first aid teams
  • Serve as an SME on various levels of safety audits & incident investigations
  • Support areas with execution of OSHA process safety management (PSM) regulations
  • Provide guidance on chemical hazards, including PPE needs & materials compatibility
  • Execute & coach others on risk assessment methodologies (Workplace Risk Assessment, What-if, HAZOP, FMEA), as well as LOPA
  • Develop & share knowledge & experience with various life safety functions & systems (work permitting, confined space, LOTO, fall protection, safety interlocks systems, PPE, etc.)
  • Support obtaining & maintaining ISO 45001 certification
  • Prepare in-depth analyses for leadership related to goals & KPIs, including trending of EHS & PSM site/department goals
  • Lead and/or consult on complex cross-functional projects/ initiatives, with stakeholders
  • Support Industrial Hygiene program to ensure compliance of applicable exposure limits
  • Support process hazard analysis (PHA) or Workplace Risk Assessments to identify EHS points of concern and ensure actions are incorporated into design and startup
  • Follow all safety & environmental requirements in performance of duties
  • Other accountabilities, as assigned

Qualifications

  • Bachelor Degree in Engineering, Chemistry, Biology, Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, or relevant field plus minimum five (5) years of direct safety experience within complex manufacturing required
  • Alternatively, an Associate Degree with seven (7) years of direct safety experience; or High School Diploma with nine (9) years of direct safety experience
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience with PSM regulated high hazard operation/manufacturing processes preferred
  • Strong working knowledge of life safety systems (LOTO, Hot Work, Confined Space, Line Break, etc.) required
  • Understanding of chemical hazards, PPE needs & materials compatibility, and OSHA PSM Standards required
  • Prior experience with emergency response teams, audit teams, or incident investigations required
  • Working knowledge of fire detection/suppression/prevention systems and/or gas detection systems required
  • Proven expertise in health & safety, planning/organizing & managing execution preferred
  • Ability to support a 24/7 operational business required

Education

Additional Requirements

  • Physical requirements include lifting up to 33 pounds, standing for extended periods, working in potentially cold environments, and potential work at height or in confined spaces as needed
