Position summary:
Director, Scientific Communications provides leadership and operational governance and ensures tactical delivery excellence across scientific communications (publications, medical education, and congress planning). Current business need is within medical education and congress planning.

Core responsibilities:
- Lead the strategy and end-to-end execution of publications, medical education and/or congress deliverables, including annual planning, governance cadence, resourcing, and delivery timelines
- Translate emerging evidence from data readouts, congress presentations, and literature surveillance into clear, approved key messages and content
- Coordinate and quality-control Medical Affairs-delivered external communications across functions to drive consistency and ensure adherence to the scientific narrative
- Direct and manage external vendors and partners to deliver defined scope, quality standards, timelines, and budgets

Medical education:
- Chair Grants and Sponsorships Review Committee (GSC) and set educational areas of interest; ensure global consistency and alignment of CME activities with medical strategy and scientific narrative
- Evaluate medical grant requests for scientific merit, educational rationale, key stakeholder fit, and compliance with internal and applicable external IME/CME policies and regulations
- Own the medical education grants budget and operational controls (documentation workflows, archiving, and outcomes reporting with defined metrics)
- Oversee content development model (briefing standards, review workflows, version control) for efficient creation of materials
- Translate emerging evidence into approved key messages and ensure timely incorporation into training and field-facing materials

Congress planning:
- Lead Medical Affairs congress strategy aligned with objectives and scientific narrative across congress materials, booth/session content, symposia support, and customer-facing communications
- Coordinate congress tactical planning (timeline management, cross-functional logistics, alignment with congress excellence)
- Ensure congress deliverables use the latest approved key messages and current data; coordinate with publications when applicable

Publications:
- Lead strategy and end-to-end execution of the publication plan across assigned indications (authorship management and data dissemination sequencing)
- Conduct and oversee monthly literature searches to identify emerging evidence, competitive intelligence, and narrative opportunities
- Provide input to clinical development planning and upstream functions where publication implications exist

Education and experience requirements:
- PharmD, MD, or PhD in a related life sciences discipline (or equivalent education/experience)
- 6+ years’ experience across scientific communications and medical affairs in life sciences, with demonstrated leadership of cross-functional programs
- Breadth in at least one of: publication strategy/plan management; medical education grants strategy/management; or congress strategy/execution (pharmaceutical industry; preferably small-molecule biopharmaceuticals)
- Understanding of compliance frameworks/standards (ACCME, IME guidelines, ICMJE recommendations, GPP, Sunshine Act provisions)
- Ability to translate evidence into approved key messages for SCP and core decks
- Understanding of publication strategy management tools/systems (e.g., Polarix; Pub Strat Max)
- Embrace innovative methods (digital formats, post-congress dissemination)
- Experience directing/reviewing scientific writing and content development in nephrology and/or rare diseases (preferred)
- Travel 20–25% domestically and internationally for congresses; face-to-face/onsite presence in San Diego; role not expected to be 100% remote
