Role Summary
Director-level EH&S (Industrial Hygiene) leader supporting R&D operations. Reporting to the Sr. Director, R&D and Capital Strategy Lead, this role provides technical authority in industrial hygiene, leads a global EH&S Community of Practice (CoP), represents R&D to the enterprise EH&S organization, and establishes above-site EH&S reporting and metrics.
Role Responsibilities
- Serve as principal industrial-hygiene authority across sites: anticipate, recognize, evaluate, and control chemical/physical/biological exposure hazards.
- Lead and govern qualitative/quantitative exposure-assessment programs (air, surface, personal monitoring; sampling strategies; interpretation vs. OELs/OEBs).
- Lead hazard/control banding for potent compounds, high-hazard biologics/ADCs, and novel molecules; define containment, engineering controls, and PPE.
- Oversee engineering controls/containment verification (ventilation, fume hoods, isolators, containment systems) and provide industrial-hygiene sign-off.
- Implement consistent IH risk-assessment methodologies across R&D sites.
- Ensure consistent lab safety program application across lab types.
- Lead global EH&S CoP (10β12 discipline experts): set priorities/deliverables; drive standards, tools, and best practices.
- Act as enterprise EH&S liaison for industrial-hygiene standards and governance/decision rights for R&D.
- Lead EH&S governance via site risk registers and network roll-ups; establish action plans and escalate as needed.
- Advise senior scientific/operational leaders on practical IH solutions; balance exposure risk with business needs.
- Establish portfolio-level EH&S/industrial-hygiene performance reporting (trends and leading/lagging indicators).
- Explore and implement AI to support EHS processes (risk assessments, change control, metrics).
- Lead incident escalation and root-cause investigations; communicate lessons learned.
- Represent R&D in EH&S vendor programs and lead EH&S/IH due diligence for BD/M&A.
- Develop talent/capability through CoP; strengthen bench strength and succession planning.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelorβs degree in industrial/occupational hygiene, environmental/occupational health, chemistry, engineering, or related.
- 10+ years progressive industrial hygiene and EH&S experience in life sciences/high-hazard regulated environments.
- Deep expertise in industrial hygiene (exposure assessment/monitoring/sampling, OELs/OEBs, hazard/control banding, engineering-control evaluation) in lab/R&D.
- Director-level (or equivalent) EH&S leadership across multiple sites/enterprise programs.
- Ability to lead in matrix environments without solid-line authority.
- Working knowledge of EH&S regulations/standards (e.g., OSHA, EPA, ACGIH, biosafety/containment, process safety) across U.S. and international jurisdictions.
- Technical breadth across core EH&S disciplines.
- Excellent communication skills across locations/functions/cultures.
- Experience leading/supporting EH&S investigations and technical program development.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH); other certifications (CSP, CBSP/RBP) a plus.
- Advanced degree (MS/MPH/PhD).
- R&D/lab IH experience with high-potency compounds/ADCs, novel chemistries, and BSL-3 and/or Select Agent programs.
- EH&S management systems/digital platforms experience (e.g., Cority, Intelex, Enablon) and exposure/EH&S metrics reporting.
- BD/M&A EH&S due diligence and vendor/service program experience.
- Active membership in a relevant professional body with CPD requirement.
